Literacy = Quality Eye Care, and Philly's Eagles Promoting It

The website New Health Dialogue recently noted: "Eye care is one key to promoting literacy. Potts noted that schools may screen children -- but there’s no follow up, no way of making sure they can afford glasses. For instance, about 60 percent of kids in the Philadelphia area who were identified with vision problems through screening, were not receiving further eye care. Hard to read or learn math if you can’t see. (The Philadelphia Eagles took this on as a cause, providing eye care and glasses.) Often a suspected “learning disability” or 'behavioral problem' can have untreated medical roots and long-lasting consequences."

Better Compliance, Better Vision

We missed mentioning this report because it was released a month before the blog recently started. Here it is from CIBA Vision: "A report published in the journal Optometry & Vision Science demonstrated that patients who replaced their silicone hydrogel (SH) contact lenses according to the manufacturer recommended replacement frequency (MRRF) experienced better comfort and vision at the end of the day than non-compliant patients.The analysis was part of a larger study sponsored by CIBA Vision, which was developed to investigate contact lens replacement schedule compliance."

B&L Promotes Kids Vision Care and Contests

Just in time for back-to-school, Bausch + Lomb is teaming up with award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden to raise awareness of vision care with parents and kids. Studies reportedly show that kids with glasses sometimes choose not to wear them, which negatively affects their performance in school.

The company noted that the Contact Lenses in Pediatrics (CLIP) Study, conducted at Ohio State University College of Optometry, New England College of Optometry, and University of Houston College of Optometry, showed that 68 percent of children and 65 percent of teens reported improved performance in activities after wearing contact lenses.

The company also is running a contest, "Seeing Eye to Eye," which asks parents with kids between the ages of 10 and 19 to submit a story of 200 words or less along with a photo by Aug. 27. The grand prize winners will receive a $5,000 scholarship and the opportunity to attend the American Music Awards on Nov. 21. For details go to www.facebook.com/soflens. Using the reminder: "Unless the glasses can perform miracles, don't pay more than you have to," the ads absurdly exaggerates reality simply because the character slips on a pair of glasses. Heat Wave Spurs Sunglass Sales

That's what happened in the UK, according to Optometry Today. "A boom in sunglasses sales has been recorded as the UK sweltered earlier this year. Market research firm GfK believes that £18.9m worth in sales was made through opticians in the second quarter of 2010, achieving a three-year record as temperatures in the UK soared to a four-year month-on-month high."

Last week VisionMonday.com reported: "The total U.S. vision care market’s revenues dipped 3 percent for the 12 months ending June 2010 to $31.7 billion compared to $32.7 billion in the prior year 12-month period, according to the newly-released Q2 Consumer Barometer," a report conducted for members of Vision Council.

Would You Buy a Pair of Glasses from an Optician?

That's precisely what the Brits are beginning to ask themselves, according to a new study. A vast majority of Brits (66%) believe that opticians are ripping them off, and 25% believe that their opticians pressured them into buying prescription eyewear.

In case you were thinking that British opticians were ruffians and hooligans, think again. The study notes that the problem has nothing to do with morality and everything to do with language. Apparently opticians use too much jargon (industry speak) and confuse their customers.

The story is receiving extensive play in the British press.

NASA (Yes, the Space Agency) Takes CLs Higher Tech

Professor Babak Parviz will present "What If Your Contact Lens Could Show You Images." Parviz will provide an overview of the process it took to build contact lenses.The presentation will be August 3 in the Reid Conference Center at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.

Freebies for Eye Health

Some 29 volunteer ophthalmologists examined 499 individuals recently as part of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's first EyeSmart EyeCheck vision screening, a program created to detect eye disease and visual impairment. Because of findings from research conducted by the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES) revealed that Latinos have higher rates of visual impairment, the AAO decided to offer its first EyeSmart program at the Family Health Fair hosted by Lady Queen of Angels Church in downtown Los Angeles. More than 50 percent of the patients were afflicted by some type of visual impairment and 70 percent needed follow-up care.

Stop Looking at Those Monitors

Eyes itch, feel tired, or do you have headaches. Maybe it's about time you stopped looing at your monitor or put down that iPhone. In a report from the news service Reuters, "according to recent research with VSP Vision Care eye doctors, 33 percent reported that nearly one third or more of their patients suffer from symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome or digital device-related vision problems. The most common symptoms of patients suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome include eye strain (82 percent), dry or irritated eyes (74 percent), fatigue (70 percent) and headaches (61 percent). Yet, two in three eye doctors report 20 percent or fewer of their patients even know what Computer Vision Syndrome is, showing a low level of understanding of the condition."

ANSI Z80.1 Standard Changed
The Vision Council recently noted that the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved a series of updates to the Z80.1 standard for prescription spectacle lenses. The update should result in better durability and quality.
