Canadians Take Health Regs Seriously

The Hamilton Spectator reports: "The Great Glasses chain of eyewear stores has been placed in court-ordered receivership following seven years of flagrant disregard for the health regulations of Ontario."

Around the Globe Eyewear Market Reports

According to a new report, the sales of eyewear in France grew to 4.82 million Euros in 2009, up 1.9%. Meanwhile, the Chinese are taking a more frugal approach to their selection of eyewear.

Over eye care in the Domincan Republic grew almost 9%, according to another report.

"Sales of contact lenses grew modestly in 2009" in the Netherlands, says another report.

Need an Eye Exam; Try Your Cell Phone

Based on research coming from MIT's Media Labs, individuals – with an app for an Android cell phone – can discover their own prescriptions. MIT isn't foolhardy enough to believe an cell phone app could replace a visit to an OD or MD. It's meant for use by individuals in developing countries without access to ODs or MDs.

Abbot Comes Out with New Solution

New Hydrogel for Continuous Wear CLs

Ocutec reportedly received approval from the European equivalent of the FDA  for a new type of hydrogel to be used in contact lenses.  The hydrogel is made from polyethylene gylcol as opposed to silicone.

Ciba Vision Challenges Patent Ruling

Bloomberg News reports that Novartis AG's Ciba Vision has appealed a decision by a court in the United Kingdom. The court recently ruled that Johnson & Johnson had not infringed on its copyright for contact lenses. Novartis argued that courts in the Netherlands and France came to different conclusions.

Cosmetic Lenses Dangerous?

The New York Times explored the reasons why cosmetic contat lneses pose a danger, especially to teenagers. The article appears two months after Connecticut's Attorney General cracked down on retailers selling them illegally. Linda Conlin launched her first column in  Eye Witness magazine, which will appear soon.
