Sclera Lenses Help Keratoconus Patients

In helping two patients deal with the

negative effects of keratoconus, even after corrective surgery, a Florida optomitist fit them with scleral contact lenses, according to the Florida Times Union. Keratoconus is the distortion of the cornea to the point that the patient told the Union-Times that he saw the world as if "looking at a kaleidoscope after swimming underwater for 12 hours."

Marchon Making 3D Eyewear

Yahoo Finance reported: "Marchon Eyewear and RealD Inc., a leading provider of 3D technology for cinema, consumer electronics and professional applications, announced today that they have signed a global licensing agreement to use the RealD brand for sales of Marchon3D™ eyewear. Additionally, to provide consumers with the best in 3D eyewear technology and design, Marchon announced they have agreed to purchase the 3D assets from MicroVision Optical to launch its 3D company, Marchon3D. David Johnson will serve as President of Marchon3D."

Optician Saves Apprentice

The British newspaper The Daily Mirror reported that a "19-year-old [who was recently hired by an optician] was suffering headaches and dizzy spells, so staff trained a retinal camera that she normally uses on customers on her eyes - and spotted the potentially fatal condition: Papilloedema."

CL Manufacturer Gets Funding for Multifocal Lens Development

With $600,000 in private funding, WaveSource Inc. will continue its work on a line of custom-made multifocal contact lenses as well as eye examination "technology." Some of its lenses would be used to correct high-order aberrations as well. It also received $87,633 in financing from the Montana Board of Research and Commercialization Technology.

UV Absorbing CLs Not Enough

Acuvue recently came out with a warning that UV-absorbing contact lenses are not substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses because the CL's do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area.

Hospitalized Elderly Need Their Eyewear

The New York Times recently noted that "situations like being without one’s eyeglasses, being in a darkened room and being unaware of the day and time can trigger delirium" in the elderly who are hospitalized.

Optician Thomas Paine of Great Yarmouth was doing good. He was "preparing to donate his organs when he died suddenly." That's the way it was reported in Advertiser24. It didn't happen quite that way as the website explains more clearly.

CBSSports.com blogger Danny Knobler reports an official in baseball as saying in response to the claim that the New York Yankees were upset about how the Mriners handled the Cliff Lee trade: that "The Yankees? How can they say anything? They held up [last winter's three-team trade] by insisting that Curtis Granderson first get his eyes checked and then insisting that [Granderson] agreed to wear contact lenses."

Electronic Bifocals?

That's precisely what Discover magazine reported recently: "PixelOptics has designed a pair of powered specs that can track users’ eyes and automatically adjust the glasses’ focal length, depending on if the wearer needs to see close-up or far-away."

There's no eye candy with this video, but you can see how the glasses work.

Special Optics Need on Easter Island

Shortly after lunchtime, the moon passed between the sun and the moon, darkening a portion of the Earth, particular the area of Chile's Easter Island. Viewers used special glasses and other devices to "see" the solar eclipse. The next eclipse will be over Australia in November 2012.

Still Using Recalled CL Solution

Optometry.com reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was concerned that contact lens customers were still using the contact lens Complete MoisturePlus Multipurpose Contact Lens solution made by Advanced Medical Optics. The solution was recalled May 2007 because the infection called acanthamoeba keratitis had been linked to the product. About 20 people have come down with the disease this year (2010) because they used the product, according to reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
