Dedication Saturday for new Vets Memorial
11/10/2006
NEW HAVEN — Mayor John DeStefano Jr. and the Veterans’ Affairs Advisory Committee have invited the public to join the city in dedicating a new Veterans Memorial Hall that commemorates the sacrifices of New Haven veterans, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the second floor of City Hall, 165 Church St.
The Veterans Memorial Hall incorporates the original 1973 dedication plaque from the New Haven Coliseum and the names of New Haven veterans who gave their lives in Vietnam and Korea, recreated from a second coliseum plaque, officials said. The memorial also has bronze insignias of military service branches. The monument was designed by Dean Sakamoto Architects LLC of New Haven under the guidance of the city’s Economic Development Department and veterans commission. Sakamoto serves on the city’s Cultural Affairs Commission and Yale School of Architecture faculty.
DeStefano especially encourages friends and family of veterans honored on the plaque to attend.
