Process and Research Links

Step 1: Research General Class Characteristics. First, you will need to research the general characteristics of your assigned animal class. This should be done as a group. This will help all of the group members become familiar with these basics before you begin researching independently.

Step 2: Decide group roles for the finished product. Each of you will be writing your own chapter in the book, but a few other general tasks need to be taken care of as well.

Two people should be given the task of compiling and editing the glossary.

One person should be in charge of making a table of contents.

One person should be in charge of putting the physical book together.

Step 3: Independent Research. Each of you should select one animal within your class to research independently as a chapter in your book. Remember that your book should show the diversity of your class, meaning that your animals should NOT be similar to each other. Each animal should represent a different habitat and a different order within the class.

Step 4: Independent Writing Rough Draft.. Once you have gathered all the information you need to write the chapter about your animal, you should write a rough draft of your chapter.

Step 5: Peer, Self and Teacher Review. Once you have finished your rough draft, you should review it to make sure that it meets all the requirements listed on the TASK page. Then, have at least one member of your group peer review it. As you review your group members work, remember that any mistakes that they make can impact your final grade on the project, so be sure to give honest, constructive feedback to ensure a high quality end product. Reviewers should list their name and any general comments at the end of the draft. Once this is done, bring the rough draft to me.

Step 6: Write Final Draft and add Visuals. Correct any mistakes and add information to your rough draft as needed. You final draft should be TYPED. You can insert pictures you find online, or you can leave space to draw your own pictures.

Step 7: Compile Glossary and Table of Contents. If you are not in charge of putting together the glossary, then it is your job to give your list of words with definitions to the appropriate team member. If you feel that a visual is necessary to explain the term, it is your job to provide the visual.

If you are in charge of the glossary, remember to put all entries in alphabetical order and to remove any duplicates (i.e. if two people picked the same word, you should combine the two definitions into one entry).

The Table of Contents should list all of the chapters in the book (including the glossary) in the correct order and indicate the page number where each one begins.

Step 8: Put it all together. Once everything is done, put all of the pages together in order and bind them. Please see me for the materials you need. The cover should include the title (animal class) and the names of all the authors.

Step 9: Reflections. Check out the Conclusion Page and answer the reflection questions.

Step 10: Final Evaluation. Please use the EVALUATION RUBRIC to grade your final product as a group. Turn in this evaluation along with the book and reflection questions to me by the end of the day on Friday.
