Drakenfell Mountain Dwarf

After the fall of the dwarven city of Ush-Badhaal, the survivors split into two groups. The first group comprised the council of Ush Badhaal who believed that the remnants of their civilization should flee their mountain halls and rebuild elsewhere in order to save their culture. The second group believed that to flee their ancient halls was to turn their back on their culture, so they decided to stay in the Drakenfell Mountains and exact revenge against the minions of Ashardallon in the hopes to one day slay the beast and reclaim their homeland.

While the council of Ush-Badhaal fled south, the second group covered their retreat by taking the fight to the enemy. After the council had made good their escape, the surviving dwarves of the second group began to scout for bases of operation elsewhere in harsh Drakenfell Mountains to continue with the long struggle ahead.

In the many years since the fall of Ush-Badhaal, the dwarves who remained in the Drakenfell managed to survive life on the cold surface of the mountain by learning its ways. They also managed to learn a thing or two about dragon slaying in the process.

Drakenfell Dwarf Traits:

These traits are to replace the dwarf traits as listed on page 14 of the Player’s Handbook.
+2 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity, -2 Charisma: Drakenfell dwarves have grown very stout and powerful because of their harsh lifestyles on the surface of the Drakenfell Mountains, but that same strength makes them a bit clumsy and the harsh life has made them very cold and gruff individuals.

Size Medium:

As Medium creatures, dwarves have no special or penalties due to their size.

Speed:

Base land speed is 20 feet. However, dwarves can move at this speed even when wearing medium or heavy armor or when their speed is reduced because of weight.

Darkvision:

Dwarves can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and dwarves can function just fine with no light at all.

Feats:

The ever-tireless dwarves receive the Endurance feat for free. Also, a dwarf has the option to select 1 cultural trait from the list given above for Drakenfell dwarf.

Skills:

Due to the fact that dwarves and water don’t mix, all dwarves have a –4 racial penalty to all swim checks.

Stonecunning:

This ability grants a dwarf a +2 racial bonus on Search checks to notice unusual stonework, such as sliding walls, stonework traps, new construction (even when built to match the old), unsafe stone surfaces, shaky stone ceilings, and the like. Something that isn’t stone but that is disguised as stone also counts as unusual stonework. A dwarf who merely comes within 10 feet of unusual stonework can make a Search check as if he were actively searching, and a dwarf can use the Search skill to find stonework traps as a rogue can. A dwarf can also intuit depth, sensing his approximate depth underground as naturally as a human can sense which way is up. Dwarves have a sixth sense about stonework, an innate ability that they get plenty of opportunity to practice and hone in their underground homes.

Stability:

+4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground).

Weapon Familiarity:

Dwarves may treat dwarven waraxes and dwarven urgroshes (see Chapter 7:Equipment) as martial weapons, rather than exotic weapons.

+1 racial bonus to attack rolls against dragons (including all creatures of the dragon type).

+4 dodge bonus to Armor Class against dragon (including all creatures of the dragon type).

+2 racial bonus on saving throws against spells and spell-like effects from any source and a +2 to racial bonus to saving throws against any breath weapon from a dragon.

Native Language:

Khûzdûl (Dwarven)

Bonus Language:

Aldarian (Common)

Other Languages:

Draconic, Giant, Gnome, Terran, and Undercommon.
Dwarves are familiar with the languages of their enemies both on the surface and subterranean.

Favored Class: Barbarian

A multi-class dwarf’s barbarian class does not count when determining whether he takes an experience point penalty for multi-classing. (see XP for Multi-class Characters, page 60). The fervor with which Drakenfell Dwarves fight their hated draconic enemies instills in them a healthy rage and knack for surviving the harsh climes of the Drakenfell Mountains.
