Gnoll

Gnolls are nocturnal carnivore's, preferring intelligent creatures for food because they provide for a more thrilling hunt.

Gnolls tend to think with a mixture of both cunning instinct and primal pack intelligence. Any alliances they make often fall apart when the gnolls get hungry. Gnolls hate giants, as well as most other humanoids and often hunt their territory to clear it of other resource contenders.

Gnolls are ruled by the strongest members of their tribe, who uses intimidation, strength and cunning to remain in power. If a chieftain is killed, the best hunters of the tribe fight for the right to lead the tribe. Gnolls revere Argelis, the light moon, though they know it as the god Yeenoghu.

Physical Description:

Gnolls stand between 6 and 7 feet tall and usually weigh between 200 and 250 pounds. A gnoll’s hyena-like head, furry body, reddish-gray mane, and gray skin make his species extremely difficult to hide.

Gnoll Traits:

+2 Constitution, +2 Dexterity, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma: Gnolls are very hearty and agile, which makes them excellent hunters, but being the savages that they are, also suffer from a slightly lowered intelligence. Gnolls have an extremely ordered pack mentality that does not allow much freedom of character; thus a gnolls sense of self-importance is diminished, which affects their Charisma.

Size Medium:

As Medium creatures, gnolls have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.

Speed:

Base land speed is 40 feet.

Low-light Vision:

A Gnoll can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. He retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.

Light Sensitivity (Ex):

As gnolls are nocturnal creatures, they are dazzled in bright sunlight or within the radius of a daylight spell.

Feats:

Gnolls receive the feat Scent for free (see pg. 314 of the MM). Also, a gnoll has the option to select 1 cultural trait from the list given above for gnolls.

Racial Skills:

Gnolls have a +2 racial bonus to the skills Listen, Spot and Survival. Also, these skills are considered class skills for gnolls regardless of their chosen class.

Fur Covered:

Gnolls are covered from head to toe in a thick coat of fur and as such gain a +2 bonus to Fortitude Saves versus cold weather (see pg. 302 of the DMG for effects of cold weather). However, gnolls must also apply a -2 penalty to their Reflex Saves to avoid catching on fire for the very same reason (see pg. 303 of the DMG for effects of catching on fire).

Outcast:

Given the gnolls reputation as savage beasts, most people would love the opportunity to exact a bit of revenge on a lone gnoll. As such, all gnolls suffer from a –2 Outcast Rating, which is a modifier that applies to all social interactions with people who have a prejudice against gnolls. Also, regardless of the gnolls behavior, no initial reaction to the gnoll will ever be better than Indifferent (see pg. 72 of the PHB). Although characters who take great pains to undo the prejudice surrounding them can diminish their stigma.

Native Language:

Gnoll

Bonus Language:

Aldarian (Common)

Other Languages:

Giant, Goblin, Orc, and the various elven languages.
Gnolls often try to learn the languages of their enemies and prey.

Favored Class: Ranger

A multi-class gnoll’s ranger class does not count when determining whether he takes an experience point penalty (see XP for Multi-class Characters, page 60). Cunning runs in a gnoll’s veins.
