Alainus

(God of Justice and Protection)

Most Holy Lord of Justice and Truth

Divine Guardian of the Innocent and Oppressed

Sacred Champion of Righteousness and Virtue

Symbol: A silver disk inlaid with a gold Alainic Cross.

Description:

The god Alainus is depicted as a tall, muscular man, generally human, wearing golden full plate armor. He bears a shield emblazoned with the Alainic Cross and wields a finely crafted longsword known as “Calhidorn” Alainus is the epitome of the heroic warrior dedicated to truth, justice, and righteousness. His priests, a martial order known as the Holy Order of Alainus, are dauntless crusaders, constantly striving to combat the evils and injustices of the world.

Worship:

Alainus does not have a large following, but what his worshippers lack in numbers they compensate for in loyalty. Most of his adherents are found in the Ciriahn Protectorates or Altara, with a large amount in The Ethengar Freeholds. Alainus worshippers tend to be virtuous warriors or Ciriahn nobles.

Temples:

Temples to Alainus are indistinguishable from castles, though they can be identified by banners and standards bearing the Alainic Cross. The chief temple to Alainus is located in the Ciriahn lord-city of Aramahn.

Clerical Raiment’s:

Knights of Alainus wear the finest armor they can afford, with half plate being common and full plate preferred. Neophyte priests wear polished chain mail until they are made full Knights. Some Knights have plate armor inlaid with patterns of gold, though this is reserved for ceremonial use rather than daily wear.

Holy Days and Times:

The holiest day of the Alainic calendar is the “Feast of Honor and Justice,” which falls on Sun’s Height 27th. On this day, Alainic temples hold solemn ceremonies in which the assembled show their thankfulness to their god for the gifts he has granted them. The Feast of Honor and Justice is also a time to remember those who have fallen while in service to Alainus. On normal days, the Knights pray for their spells during the hours of Newday.

Relationships:

The religion of Alainus does not have particularly good relations with the other religions, though it doesn’t necessarily have bad relations, either. The Knights rarely have dealings with other faiths, preferring to concern themselves with their own affairs. Vanya is considered worthy of their attention, but most other religions are considered their enemies (as in the case of the evil gods) or simply not worth consideration. In addition, the church has a guarded opinion towards wizards and sorcerers, as they are suspicious of the source of their powers.

Essence of the Faith:

• Always embody the Alainic Virtues: courage, strength, and honor.

• Protect those who cannot protect themselves.

• Serve as an example for those beneath you; respect those who are your equal; and honor those who stand above you.

• Always promote and uphold order and lawfulness when it serves the common good.

• Place no trust in those that draw upon powers of dubious origin, until they have proven themselves to you beyond doubt.

• To betray your word is to dishonor Alainus and yourself.

Factions and Orders:

In addition to the Holy Order of Alainus, there are two other factions in the Alainic religion that are worthy of note, The Children of the Light and the Templars.

Children of the Light

The Children of the Light, or more commonly, the White Cloaks, is an extremist group. While most Knights tend to view arcane spellcasters with caution, they are generally tolerated. The Children of the Light, however, are convinced that all arcane magic, which they have disparagingly dubbed “witchcraft”, originates from some dark source (though they tend to disagree on exactly what this source is). They have devoted themselves to hunting and destroying as many “witches” (wizards, sorcerers, and the like) as they can. The White Cloaks are based out of a large citadel near the town of Northgate in Altara.

Domains: Champion, Justice

Favored Class: Fighters

Typical Alignment: Lawful-Neutral

Templars

The other order is the Templars. Templars are Knights who have taken a particular interest in the destruction of “unnatural” beings, primarily the undead and to a lesser extent, demons and devils. The Templars travel the world over, but their home is the city-state of Illad in the Ethengar Freeholds.

Domains: Champion, Death

Favored Class: Holy Warriors only

Typical Alignment: Lawful-Good

Game Information:

Allowed Alignments:

Lawful Good and Lawful Neutral

(Note that despite what the Player’s Handbook says, Paladins of Alainus, now called Holy Warrior’s,  may be either Lawful-Good or Lawful-Neutral. They are still considered paladins even if lawful-neutral and receive their powers and abilities based on the Holy Warrior domains they choose rather than what the Player’s Handbook says.)

Domains:

Champion, Guardian

Favored Weapon:

Longsword

Gift of Alainus:

Beginning at 3rd level, a paladin of Alainus can Discern Lies as per the 4th level cleric spell as a spell-like ability once per day. The paladin can use this ability as though cast by a cleric of equal level to the paladin. Every three level the paladin advances he may use this ability once more per day, i.e. once at 3rd, twice at 6th, etc, etc.

Holy Day Powers:

On their holy day, the paladins of this religion have many of their low domain powers increased. The effect is either doubled, or they may use them twice as many times per day.

i.e. lay on hands will heal up to twice the normal amount, they may smite evil twice per day and they may add twice their Charisma modifier (if positive) to their saving throws for that day (if the paladin does not have a positive Charisma modifier, they may add +1 to their saves).

Notes: The priests of this god are represented by the Holy Warrior class; (see page 242 of the Book of the Righteous for details) there are no clerics that serve him, nor are there paladins for the other religions.

Divine Gifts for Laity:

Once per month, characters with this god as their patron may detect evil, in the same manner as a paladin. On their holy day, the faithful may cast bless weapon.

Common Prayers:

Some of the oldest prayers to Alainus are actually quite poetic and are still in use. One used by soldiers before battle in so ancient that scholars are uncertain of its ultimate origin, with many maintaining that it is what Alainus himself uttered before his final battle with Orcus.

“I am the river and the mountain.

As the river, I rage in times of torrent,

and gentle in times of drought.

I swell to overflowing with my wrath,

And my rage is dry in calmer seasons.

None can control my course,

None can alter it.

None can stand against me.

As the mountain, I am strong.

I do not wax or wane.

Age shall never overcome me.

I will not be moved.

I will not be shaken.

I will not be broken.

I am the river and the mountain,

Unstoppable and unbreakable.”

The Seven Virtues of Alainus:

The founding cornerstones of the Alainic faith, the Seven Virtues are the qualities that are to be strived for daily by all who would call Alainus their god.

Courage

Truth

Honor

Loyalty

Hospitality

Justice

Mercy
