Mathonwy

(God of Knowledge and Magic)

All-Knowing Celestial Sage

The Divine Archmage

The Keeper of all Knowledge

Symbol: A silver diamond inlaid with a bluish metal shaped in the “Cross of Math”

Description:

Mathonwy’ preferred form is that of an old, white-haired man dressed in grey robes and holding a large tome. Smaller books hang from his belt, a quill, and similar artistry tools. Mathonwy is the god of knowledge and its acquisition, as well as the magical arts. His priests, known as the “Scholars of Mathonwy,” travel the world over, seeking knowledge of any and all kinds. Their findings are recorded in scrolls and tomes and stored in Mathonwy temples.

Worship:

Mathonwy is a somewhat popular deity. Sages, wizards, travelers, adventurers, nomads, scribes, bards and other knowledge seekers worship (or at least pray to) him. He is particularly well liked in civilized areas, especially cities in Aldariah and Deriahn.

Temples:

Mathonwy temples are large, monolithic buildings. They look like a cross between a library and a monk cloister, containing myriad rooms; some are cluttered with books, tomes, and scrolls. Larger temples will have attached auditoriums for teaching large groups, as well as humble rooms for travelers and wanderers (available for a small donation). The chief temple to Mathonwy is located in the city-state of Sp˙re.

Clerical Raiments:

The Scholars of Mathonwy care little for embellishment or ornate attire.
Their clothing consists of simple grey robes and whatever else they care to wear.

Holy Days and Times:

The most holy day of the Mathonwy year is the “Festival of Enlightenment,” which takes place on Second Seed 15th. The priests give thanks to Mathonwy for his gifts of learning, curiosity, and creativity. They recount for one another the things they have learned or created in the past year, offering to pass that knowledge or skill on to their fellow Scholars. Other days of the year, priests of Mathonwy pray for their spells during the hours of Newday.

Relationships:

The Scholars of Mathonwy are impartial in most of their dealings with others, having little prejudice or preference for others outside those who tend to worship their god (this holds true both for other religions as well as organizations or particular categories of people). They do not tolerate the destruction of knowledge or those who would suppress or obscure the truth.

Essence of the Faith:

• There is no treasure of greater worth than that of knowledge unpossessed.

• Do not allow ignorance or emotion to obscure the truth.

• The destruction of knowledge or learning, by any means, is not to be tolerated.

• Teach all those who are willing to learn.

• Never refuse a worthy student a chair at your table or a seat at your fire.

• Always encourage creativity and curiosity in yourself and others.

Factions and Orders:

There are no notable factions within the Iberian faith.

Holy Day Powers:

On their holy day, the priests receive the gift of Insight, which operates in a matter identical to Bardic Knowledge. A cleric that already has this ability gains a bonus equal to their total class level plus twice their Intelligence modifier (for instance: a 3rd Level Bard/4th Level Cleric with a 17 Intelligence would have a bonus of +13: +7 for their level and +6 for their Intelligence modifier doubled). In addition, the clerics may prepare an additional domain spell for each level they may cast. This bonus spell may come from either of the cleric’s two domains.

Notes:

Clerics of this religion commonly multiclass as wizard/clerics.

Divine Gifts for Laity:

Once per month, characters with this god as their patron may add a +2 competence bonus to one roll of any of the following skills: Decipher Script, Gather Information, or Knowledge (any). They must choose one of the skills, not all; but they need not make the same choice every month). If the character is a bard, they may instead choose to use the bonus on a Bardic Knowledge roll. On their holy day, the faithful may cast comprehend languages.

Common Prayers:
"Your mind is the clearest of all:
No matter how clear we make our own minds, then, we can’t know yours.
Sitting outside and above your house you see it completely; sitting within and among your house you know it completely.
We, entwined about by it, know only our part in it and even that not well.
It is wise, then to approach with praise and offerings so that we might know ourselves or, failing that, know you who know, and in knowing become wise.
