Nyrike

(God of Night, Luck and Vengeance)

Divine Master of Deception

Exalted Grandmaster of Fortune

Masked Lord of Vengeance

Symbol: An orange-metal disk with an engraving of masks of sorrow and joy.

Description:

Nyrike is portrayed as a humanoid dressed in a long robe of ever-changing color and design and wearing a hood or mask. This garb makes Nyrike’s gender indiscernible, though the deity is generally considered to be male. Nyrike is the patron of those who seek their livelihood in non-conventional ways. His religion and priests, called “Tricksters”, are not evil, but most kingdoms or organizations do not look upon them favorably.

Worship:

Nyrike receives most of his worship from gamblers, thieves, and swindlers, though many people will give him a prayer or two when they are seeking a little extra luck in their lives. In that regard he receives a modicum of veneration through the civilized kingdoms. The greatest number of Tricksters and non-clerical followers are found in the city-state of Maar.

Temples:

There are no temples dedicated to Nyrike. Rather, Tricksters will gather periodically in a particular location that for a time (up to a month) is considered to be a “temple.” The location varies, but will always be in an unremarkable place and nothing indicating that it is being used for Nyrike worship will be left behind after ceremonies have been completed. Tricksters claim there is no chief temple to Nyrike, but whether this is true or not is unknown.

Clerical Raiment’s:

Unlike the other religions, Tricksters don’t adhere to a standard style of dress, other than wearing masks during religious ceremonies. Generally, when it comes to their choice of clothing, Nyrike’s priests go to lengths to conceal the fact that they are Tricksters.

Holy Days and Times:

Tricksters do not celebrate a holy day of their own. Rather, they infiltrate the ceremonies of other religions on their holiest days, masquerading as priests of that faith. If they are successful, they gain the benefits given to the clerics that they have impersonated (how Nyrike accomplishes this is a mystery). What a Trickster does with his temporary powers is his decision, but generally they will use their boon to disrupt or otherwise upset the ceremonies of the day. During the rest of the year, Tricksters pray for their spells at Eventide.

Relationships:

Nyrike’s church is rather unpopular with the clergy of the other gods. Tricksters are treated with scornful indifference generally, though the other priesthoods are not above retribution or violence for actions committed against them. Nobles and other authoritarians also dislike Nyrike and his faithful and most groups and organizations would prefer to have no dealings with them, either.

Essence of the Faith:

• There is no such thing as “destiny” – all is chance and all things are possible, no matter how unlikely.
• Never work towards getting something tomorrow if you can simply take it today.
• Truth is relative – allow others to see only what you want them to see, hear what you want them to hear and believe what you want them to believe.
• When faced with indecision, roll the dice and follow where they lead you.
• Trust no one but yourself.
• If a person cannot prevent theft of their property, they were not intended to keep it in the first place.

Factions and Orders:

There are no factions of note within the Nyrike religion (if there are, they are very well-hidden).

Game Information:

Any non-lawful

Holy Day Powers:

On their holy day, clerics of this god gain the powers of whichever faith they manage to (successfully) infiltrate (refer to the appropriate deity entry for further information).

Notes:

Clerics of this religion channel divine energy to Dispel Illusions, rather than turning or rebuking the Undead. This supernatural ability functions in the same manner as the spell dispel magic. It is effective only against illusions and is usable a number of times per day equal to three plus the priest’s CHA bonus (the feat Extra Turning increases the use of this ability just as if the cleric was able to affect the Undead). Clerics of this religion commonly multiclass as rogue/clerics.

Divine Gifts for Laity:

Once per month, characters with this god as their patron may add a +2 luck bonus to one attack roll (“to hit,” not damage), saving throw, or skill check. No special power is granted for a holy day (since this religion doesn’t have any of their own).
