Cazic-Thule

(God of Fear, Murder and Nightmares)

Terrible Lord of the Darkest Shadows

Profane Master of Unholy Slaughter

Prince of Absolute Terror and Unspeakable Torment

Symbol: A dark metal disk, engraved with a skull flanked by two serpents and topped with a bat.

Description:

Cazic-Thule is a malevolent god of pure, unadulterated evil. There is no single physical description that fits him, as Cazic-Thule is portrayed differently by the various cultures and races that know of him, and even his own cults disagree on what their god’s “true” form is. The most common descriptions lean towards either a shadowy, incorporeal being or a tentacled, abominable horror. Cazic-Thule seeks nothing less than to establish a kingdom of evil across the entire world, enslaving its inhabitants to his vile rule. His priests, the Shadarans, dedicate their lives to furthering this objective, believing they will be rewarded when this time comes.

Worship:

Cazic-Thule is one of the most reviled deities in the world. His worship is forbidden and generally punishable by death, in almost every civilized (and even most uncivilized) regions on all of Erndorth. Still, there are those whose greed, ambition, or dark souls leave them no other option but to serve this darkest of dark gods.

Temples:

Like other evil gods, temples to Cazic-Thule are built either in hidden or hard to reach areas (such as caves or catacombs), or in wilderness regions far from centers of civilization. The buildings are built in a dark, twisted manner, and contain sculptures, basreliefs, and tapestries depicting beings and scenes of great evil. It is unknown where the principle temple to Cazic-Thule is located.

Clerical Raiments:

Shadarans wear hooded black robes during ceremonies, but wear whatever will attract the least attention to them otherwise.

Holy Days and Times:

The holiest (or unholiest) times of the year for Shadarans are the nights of the thirteenth new moon of the year, a time they call the “Nights of Deepest Shadow.” On those evenings, the Shadarans revel in evil, suffering, and death. They sacrifice as many victims to Cazic-Thule as they possibly can, engaging in raids and massacres in their desire to appease their god. In return, the evil deity grants them a great deal of extra power for spells and rebuking/commanding the Undead, as well as an increase in combat skills (the Shadarans are indeed a fearful enemy during the “Nights”). Shadarans pray for spells during the hours of Deepnight.

Relationships:

The church of Cazic-Thule bears total hatred for every other faith. Shadarans promote a monotheistic dogma, saying no god is worthy of worship other than Cazic-Thule. Likewise, the other religions consider Cazic-Thule to be a major enemy, as do most rulers and organizations.

Essence of the Faith:

• Cazic-Thule is the One. All other religions are blasphemy and must be destroyed.

• Spread death and suffering among the non-believers.

• The thrones of the earth shall be trampled beneath the feet of Cazic-Thule. Serve him, and you will be rewarded in his magnificent new kingdom.

• Spread strife and discord among our enemies, and then strike while their attention is diverted.

• Dying in service to Cazic-Thule will ensure your place at his side in the afterworld.

• Use whatever means necessary to realize Cazic-Thule’s reign on the earth.

Factions and Orders:

There are undoubtedly scores of Cazic-Thule cults; the three best known are the Brotherhood of Ineffable Darkness, a human faction operating along the Emerald Coast and in the Varghani Desert; the Children of the Darkness, an order of Orcazhai shaman, found primarily in Gharakaag; and the Noctus Serpentis, a cult made up of the normally antitheist draconians, which operates out of some unknown subterranean city.

Holy Day Powers:

On the religion’s holy days, the clerics receive three benefits. First, they are granted an allotment of spells as if they were two levels higher than they actually are (example: A 3rd level cleric with WIS 13, normally has a spell array of 4 / 3+1 / 1+1; on their holy day, the cleric’s spells run 5 / 4+1 / 2+1 / 1+1). All spell effects based on level are still as the cleric’s actual level (using the previous example, if the cleric casts detect good, the duration would still only be limited to a maximum of thirty minutes, not fifty). Granted powers are either doubled in effect or may be used twice as often that day (whichever is more appropriate). Second, the clerics receive a +4 profane bonus to all attempts at rebuking Undead (this bonus applies to both the roll for determining the most powerful Undead affected as well as the roll for turning damage). The final benefit is the cleric’s Base Attack Bonus is treated as that of a fighter of equivalent level (if multi-classed, the fighter BAB applies only to the cleric class).

Divine Gifts for Laity:

Characters with this god as their patron may cast doom once per month. On their holy days, they may cast death knell.
