Dark Age Timeline

(NA: 0 though NA: 1050)

The first year of the New Age is not exactly known to sages as the history of the years following the Age of Light was not recorded until Euronomous, the king of Ravenscar, decided to put them to paper some 350 years after the end of the age. Based on what few facts he did know, the occasional rare conversation with the longer-lived races of Erndorth, as well as a few instances of educated guessing, Euronomous has placed the fall of the so called Age of Light some 350 years before the year in which he decided to write of it. So in fact the Lornenien Calendar, as it came to be called, actually was created in the year 350 of the new age.

0 – This date marks the beginning of the Lorenien Calendar, as well as the end of the Aldarrian Calendar. The king of Ravenscar, a young man named Euronomous, decided to mark the end of the Age of Light with the actual destruction of the City of Aldarriah itself. Although one could very correctly argue that the actual end of the Aldarrian Empire happened almost 100 years before this date with the death of the last of the emperors of Aldarriah, Sargen Tyro VII.
With the death of Emperor Tyro VII, the empire of Aldarriah went through almost a century of bloodshed and civil wars. Although several attempts to place a new emperor on the throne were tried, those emperors that followed Tyro were ruler in name only and had little real power as most of their power base was spent fending off others who thought they would make a better ruler. No noble house beyond the house of Tyro manages to retain power for more than a few years at most. Some of these puppet emperors did not even manage to retain their throne a year before being topple by the next noble house in line for the emperial seat.
The end of the nearly 100 year period after the death of Emperor Tyro VII, The Great Burning, was marked with the destruction of the City of Aldarriah itself by the very elves who had a hand in its creation over 1000 years before. With this one final act completed, the elves finally retreated into the great forests of Erndorth seldom being seen again. After the destruction of the greatest city of humans ever created, nobody would ever again hold the title of Emperor of Aldarriah.

333 – The sleeping god Sanathon is resurrected from his eternal prison located deep under the elven Valley of Deriahn. In her rage, and in order to try and prevent the evil god’s resurrection the elven war goddess Vanya destroys the entire Valley and curses the land. Thereafter, no life of any kind would find refuge in the once beautiful elf kingdom. The Valley of Deriahn is made a vast, dead wasteland and is renamed the Land of the Titan. To this day the angry spirits of even those elves who remained true to Vanya still haunt the region, unable to accept their rest with a goddess they now despise.

335 – Universally despised by her former elven paladins the Tal-Shiarr, Vanya is rejected as their god for her wrath on even the innocent of the Valley of Deriahn. The entire Holy Order of Vanya disappears from the face of Erndorth for a time.

343 – Euronomous is crowned king of the young kingdom of Ravenscar after he reclaims it from a barbarian horde that had totally overrun it six years earlier. In thanksgiving to his god for his swift victory, Euronomus proclaims that the Holy Order of Sanathon is made Ravenscars state religion and its priests be made chief advisors for all current and future lords of Ravenscar.

350 – Euronomous, the King of Ravenscar, creates a brief history of the now long dead empire of Aldarriah and in honor of his teacher, the sage Lornen; he decides to name it after him. This new calendar was named the Lorenien Calendar and is still used to this day.

992 – The evil Padisha-Mage Kerevaks comes to power in Ryliah by usurping the throne of his brother. After slaying the royal family, save for the oldest son Kallra and only daughter Ellonwae who managed to escape into Altara, Kerevaks spends the next few years solidifying his grip on the land through the use of foul and powerful magic.

999 – The Magiocracy of Ryliah invades the kingdom of Ciriah. The first attack against Ciriah is made when creatures summoned of magic attack Ciriah’s Lordcity of Aramahn. The attack had the exact opposite affect it was intended to have. Due to the vengeful wrath of Ciriah’s new king, a very charismatic leader named Tredorian; the Ciriahns marched across southern Landor in a bloody fury. Within seven short years, the vengeful Ciriahns would bring the great Padishah Mages of Ryliah to their knees.

1006 – A massive force of ogres assault the small town of Volney, located in western Ciriah. The attack lasts but a few hours, but in that time fully a third of Volneys population is slain and another third is taken captive by the ogres never to be seen again. The survivors of Volney, to this day, remember the date with sorrow.

1007 – In order to help heal the wounds of their massive war, King Tredorian of Ciriah accepts the daughter of the former Padishah of Ryliah in marriage. The fourteen-year-old Ellonwae Corwyn of Ryliah is betrothed to King Tredorian and moves to Aramahn to await the day she will marry.

1008 – The Society of Lucion is formed by the remnants of the nobility of Ryliah in order to preserve their magical heritage from a world that has grown increasingly fearful of wizards and magic in general. The Society was named in honor of the sage Lucion, who was the librarian of the city of Nisaya. He was burned alive trying to save the cities public library when the Ciriahn army attacked the city in 1006 and put anything they thought to be of a magical nature to the torch. Lucion’s beloved city of Nisaya was renamed the city of Lucion in his honor.

1010 – King Tredorian marries Ellonwae Corwyn of Ryliah and she is named Queen of the Greater Kingdom of Ciriah.

1018 – At the behest of the High King of Aerimar, King Tredorian of Ciriah sends a small army to Aerimar to help the high king reclaim it from barbarian hoards.

1022 – The Priest Meaax Khamar marches a mercenary army into the Kingdom of Tethyre and conquers it. Meaax takes the title of High Lord and renames Tethyre after himself. To this day, the once proud kingdom of Tethyre is known as Khamar and is still ruled by the iron grip of High Lord Meaax.

1027 – The kingdom of Aerimar is officially claimed as a protectorate of Ciriah. The former High King of Aerimar is named Duke of the Protectorate of Aerimar and Ciriahn settlers begin moving to the distant mountainous region.

1028 – The once great paladin Delsenor Macloth begins her long journey into history from her tiny home village of Minoron located in the Ethengar Freeholds of central Landor.

1036 – The Kingdom of Ciriah declares itself an empire and King Tredorian is officially named Emperor Tredorian I of Ciriah. The newly crowned emperor of Ciriah names Ovidia Vara of Avaniah as his successor. The Emperial Platinum Dragon is minted to mark the occasion.

1040 – A heroic warrior known as Authur Stonebreaker makes a name for himself in Ravenscar by supposedly slaying a dragon that was terrorizing the village of Bethel in eastern Ravenscar. To this day Authur Stonebreaker is still known as “The Bear of Bethel”.

1042 – The Draconian mage, Ryulis and his dwarven companion Thorim Strongaxe are sent by Emperor Tredorian of Ciriah to do battle with a dragon known as the Black Beast of Mordaka. In return for this service, Emperor Tredorian offers the title of Lord and the post of Sheriff of Volney to the heroic non-humans. After a bit of thought however, Thorim and Ryulis decide it would be best not to accept the offer and soon leave Ciriah forever.

1043 – A deadly plague breaks out in the Kingdom of Kharadas is northern Landor. Before Fürst Ulgart von Gerrich of Kharadas does anything about to stop it several thousand people have already died from the Unholy Scourge as it came to be called.

1044 – The people of Kharadas begin to take extreme measures to put an end to the plague which continued to spread even into the long winter of 1043. By this time most people believe that the plague is almost certainly magical in nature.
Witch burnings, doomsday cults and mass hysteria begin to take hold of the populace. Fürst Ulgart is forced to take action to try to end the hysteria by giving the people of Kharadas another enemy to focus their aggression against.
After placing blame for the plague on the feared and mistrusted Witches of Wyrrath, Fürst Ulgart von Gerrich begins to assemble an army to attack the White Tower of Taram-Vash, home to the Sisterhood of the Sightless Eye.

1045 – On the 10th day of Firstseed a Kharadan force, led by the foul half-orc Gwer, assault the town of Far Steading and burn it to the ground. News of the atrocities committed against the people the small town were heard of even as far away as Ravenscar. The Kharadan army regroups in the town of Owec and assembles for an assault against Taram-Vash. Most people expect that the white tower would fall before winter.

1046 – The Kharadan army is forced back into Kharadas before autumn fully sets in due to unnaturally violent weather which seemed to follow the army all the way back home.
