Saddle UP!

Tall Tales & Stories

Here is the Colony Road Gang Saddling up after a great lunch in Baysville.

Heroic Breakdowns

Here is a picture of Steven Manzer (Colony Rd) beside his (new to him) Skidoo.  Steven was a newbie skidooer and heard a Wooow-Wew-Wew sound while traveling to Huntsville.  Inspection of the engine showed the belt was still on.  Five minutes down the trail - DISASTER!  Turns out there are TWO belts - one for the fan, one for the drive.  The fan belt is behind cowlings so it is not visible - guess which one popped off - to the tune of $600 worth of repair - Thanks to Bill Brownridge (Yech...towed by a Polaris)  for the tow, and Reiner Woerman for the trailer lift back!  Go figure, a Ford and Skidoo owner being towed/trailered by Polaris and GM!

How To's

Summerize your snowmobile by filling your gas tank and add fuel stabilizer.  Run the machine and spray engine storage compound into the carb until it stalls.  Pull the plugs and spray some WD40 in each cylinder.  Pull the engine over a couple of times with the ignition off.  Insert tin foil or steel wool in air intakes and exhaust to prevent Chipmunks from nesting.  Spray the engine and exposed metal parts down with WD-40.

Prep For First Trip by removing any tin foil or steel wool (you did remember to do this didn't you?). Fill your oil injection tank.  Check your drive AND fan belt (if you are not liquid cooled you likely have a fan belt - see Heroic Breakdowns!).  Start the engine.  Let the oil burn off and change the plugs as they will be fouled.  Check your trail safety kit.

Trail Safety Kit - as a minimum you should have:

  • Spare drive AND fan belt
  • 1 Litre injection oil
  • Tow strap or rope
  • Two (or more) spare plugs
  • Spare headlight
  • Tool kit that came with your machine
  • Ball cap (for the bar), gloves
  • Duct Tape (of course)
  • Ice picks if you travel the water ways. These should be worn and not in the kit!
  • Chocolate or some other high energy food in case you are stranded.
  • Compact flair gun and/or walkie talkies/cell phone just incase.
