9005 Conversion

Alright, so this is just a quick write-up on how you can get your 9005(high beam) bulb to fit into the lo-beam. The purpose of this is to give better light, instead of 1000 lumens, like the original low beam bulb, it'll now be putting out 1700 lumens, so therefore 70% more light.

This procedure isnt really all that hard to do, there are only 3 different steps that you'll have to do.

FIRST STEP:
The first thing to do has to do with the top, center notch on the top of the 9005 bulb. if you compare it with the 9006 bulb, you'll notice that they're actually opposite.

The way to fix this, is to cut off the left side of the notch on the 9005 bulb, like shown in the picture below. I used a bench grinder and just grinded off half of the notch, but you could use either a knife or a dremel too, or pretty much anything else you think would work.

Thats it for this step.

SECOND STEP:
You'll notice that the rubber o-ring going around the bulb on the 9006 is actually a bit bigger than the 9005 o-ring. So to fix this problem, take the o-ring off of the 9006 bolb, and put it onto the modified 9005 bulb, like the pic below. In this case, the yellow ring is off of the 9006, and the red off of the 9005, although the colors will vary between bulb maufacturers.

That step is done

LAST STEP:
This is probably the hardest of the three steps, since its in a tight spot. If you look on the bulb inside of where the harness connects to, you'll notice that 9005 bulb has two notches, and the 9006 only has one. This is done because they didnt want you plugging the harness into the wrong bulb. What we'll have to do is cut out both of the notches in the modified 9005 bulb. Personally, i used a soldering iron, and just melted them down, but you can use a knife, or maybe even a dremel if you have a bit small enough to get in there.

Now you're done, put the new modified 9005 bulbs into the low beam socket, plug them in, and make sure that they both work. If they do, i'd highly suggest aligning your headlights, so that they're not pointing up too high and into the eyes of incoming drivers or into the rear of the car in front of you. I believe the low beams should be pointed 7" below the center line of the headlights.

Enjoy your brighter headlights
