Emperor Exar Kun

An excerpt from the Dark Side Sourcebook, altered for my game.

Tempted by the promise of powers he arrogantly believed he could control, Exar Kun went from promising Jedi apprentice to formidable Sith Lord with barely a backward glance. Filled with curiosity and convinced there was nothing he could not handle, he heeded the advice of the Dark Jedi spirit Freedon Nadd, who found in Exar Kun an apt and willing pupil. But even Freedon Nadd was surprised at how eagerly Exar Kun embraced the dark side.

Consumed by pride and ambition, Jedi student Exar Kun had a dark place in his heart that even his vaunted master, Vodo-Siosk Baas, could not reach. An excellent student and a master swordsman, Exar Kun was fascinated with the powers of the ancient Sith Lords. Supremely confident, Kun felt that he could separate out the dark side from the abilities used by the Sith, and use those abilities to greatly expand the Jedi Order's understanding of the Force. But Kun was stymied by the elder Krevaaki, who constantly warned his student to heed only the lessons Vodo himself taught him. Impatient and irritated, Exar Kun abandoned Master Vodo's training and went in search of darker power.

His travels brought him to Onderon, where he learned of the Sith tomb of Freedon Nadd on Onderon's moon, Dxun. Encountering Freedon Nadd's spirit, Exar Kun learned of the Sith crypts on Korriban, and journeyed there to continue his search. On Korriban, he again spoke with Freedon Nadd's spirit, who tricked Kun into at first accepting the dark side, then embracing it. Under Nadd's ghostly tutelage, Kun traveled on to Yavin IV, the last stronghold of the Sith Empire, where a thousand years before Naga Sadow went into exile. Captured there by the primitive descendants of Sadow's Massassi warriors, Exar Kun escaped his own execution and seized a dark side amulet from among Sadow's treasures, using it to escape the gargantuan dark side beast that the Massassi brought forth to devour him. He then turned the weapon on Freedon Nadd, destroying the dark side spirit forever.

Now the master of the Massassi rather than their captive, Exar Kun sought out the ancient relics Naga Sadow brought to Yavin IV and discovered among them the instruments of Sith alchemy. Turning these devices on his now-loyal Massassi subjects, Exar Kun transformed them into mighty warriors, then set out in Naga Sadow's ancient battleship to track down others who Kun sensed had the dark side training to usurp his power. He found them on Cinnagar -- the Sith acolyte Aleema Keto and her Dark Jedi lover, Ulic Qel-Droma. He and Ulic fought for supremacy, but their battle was cut short by the appearance of a group of Sith spirits, led by none other than Marka Ragnos -- Naga Sadow's predecessor. Ragnos declared that Exar Kun would be the new Dark Lord of the Sith, and that Ulic Qel-Droma would be his first apprentice. Together, the two would conquer the galaxy and build a new Sith Empire.

Exar Kun began his part of the work by recruiting several impressionable Jedi students from the Jedi learning center on Ossus, bringing them to Yavin IV, then using the power of a Sith holocron to turn them to the dark side. After sending them out on missions to assassinate their former masters, Kun traveled to Coruscant to secure the release of Ulic Qel-Droma, who had brashly attacked the center of the Republic in hopes of a swift victory. In the process he once more faced his former master, Vodo-Siosk Baas, this time armed with a double-bladed lightsaber of his own construction. Master Vodo did not have a chance, and fell to his former student.

Kun and Ulic escaped back to Yavin 4, where they planned their next attack against the Jedi learning center on Ossus. Arranging for Aleema Keto to use a Sith artifact to trigger a supernova, the two launched their forces at the evacuating Jedi, while they themselves went in search of Jedi relics to plunder. While Ulic battled his brother Cay Qel-Droma, Exar Kun returned with his treasure to Yavin IV -- only to be betrayed by Ulic to the Jedi. Blocked from using the Force -- light or dark -- by his former paramour Nomi Sunrider, Ulic Qel-Droma surrendered to the Jedi and told them where to find Exar Kun's secret base.

Seeing that the Jedi fleet in the skies above him was poised to destroy him, Exar Kun opted for a somewhat risky escape. Utilizing the alchemical apparatus he used to mutate the Massassi, Exar Kun divested himself of his physical body and took refuge within one of his temples, knowing that his spirit would live forever and waiting for the day when he could take his vengeance on the Jedi.

The following is information generated by me to explain Kun's ascendancy and presence:

The spirit of Kun was thought to have been destroyed by the combined efforts of Luke Skywalker and his students, but this has since proven not to be the case. It has been learned that he hid some of his spirit inside Luke's holocron, and when all thought he was gone, he had time to reconstitute his spirit within. After a time, it was arranged that a human replica droid in the service of Palpatine, named Halbred, snuck into the compound on Yavin and stole the holocron. Invested within it, Kun was able to have his spirit finally leave Yavin IV. The holocron was taken to Wayland, where an unexpected Kun manifested out of the holocron before and equally unexpecting Emperor Palpatine. A plan was then hatched between the two evil Jedi. The Emperor procurred a sample of Kun's blood, recovered from the ancient Jedi databases, and used his Sparti cloning cylinders to grow a clone of Kun. Using a dark ritual found within the holocron, Palpatine planted the holocron into the clone's chest, where otherwise the heart would have been. Here, the spirit of Kun was able to infuse the body, thus granting him life again. The energies of the holocron, however, constantly reinvigorate Kun's spirt, and he then does so to his body, thus he is effectively immortal. Palpatine, near his end and needing time to find a way to reinvigorate his own failing clones, has allowed Kun to ascend to the throne of the Empire, thus maintaining the imbalance of the New Republic and allowing him to apply all of his attention to his own personal problems. How Kun will rule remains to be seen.

Standard Attack Method: Kun often uses both blades of his saber, in order to benefit from more of his feats. He begins with single attacks, wading into the fray, followed by all out attacks, using Dodge and Combat Expertise (active Defense +6; attack bonus –5), as well as Power Attack (-5 Attack, +5 Damage) for a total attack bonus of +19/+14/+9/+4 [+19/+14, second blade], with 8d8+11 damage, and a total Defense of 42. Complete Defense can reach 46. Kun can also augment these numbers greatly with his Battlemind and Enhance Ability Force skills, and his Sith Sorcery Force feat, but these numbers can shift widely, and so must be figured at time of use.

Minions: Kun has as his minions two of his Royal Guards (Soldier 9/Force Adept 2, VP/WP: 102/18; +15 melee; force pike or +13 ranged; rifle). These warriors are garbed in the ceremonial red armor, and bear force pikes and blaster rifles. They are often affected with Kun’s Sith Master ability. Also an advisor (Noble 4) rounds out the entourage.

The new Galactic Emperor is part clone, part Force Spirit, part science, and part sorcery. After his death at the hands of the Jedi Council and Old Republic, Kun was left only a spirit of his former self; eternal, but trapped forever on the world he once ruled most of the galaxy from. Only the powerful pyramidal energies Kun and others focused there allowed him to anchor himself to the living world. That changed when Luke Skywalker came to Yavin IV. Though Kun was discovered, and later dispelled, he had safeguarded his spirit against destruction. Through the concentrated Force energies of Skywalker’s holocron, one in which Kun was intimately familiar (he had been Vodo Siosk Baas’ apprentice), Kun was able to merge his own energies with it, and thus leave a piece of himself behind. When the students and Skywalker destroyed Kun later, they thought he was gone forever, but they had no way of knowing that a piece of him was healing itself in the holocron. Later, when Emperor Palpatine had the holocron stolen, he was surprised to find the ancient spirit inside it. The Emperor agreed to aide Kun, in exchange for services later. They recovered an old sample of Kun’s blood from the Jedi Library on Ossus, and with it and the Spaarti cloning cylinders they grew a clone of Kun. Through a ritual Kun had discovered during his stay in the holocron, they were able to fuse the holocron into a cavity in Kun’s clone, thus allowing him to animate it directly. Now, acting as Emperor in Palpatine’s absence, Kun means to again try and bring down the New Jedi Order, and the New Republic. As if his return weren’t bad enough, it has perpetuated a mass secession of students from Skywalker’s school to the Dark Side. Matters only worsen as Emperor Kun has resurrected several thought-gone nightmares of the past. Can Kun be stopped?

In his current incarnation, Exar Kun cuts a rather striking figure. At almost two meters tall, he may look down upon a good number of his subjects. Kun has long, black hair, which he keeps in a tightly tied, long ponytail, and his eyes are a cold shade of gray-blue. He keeps his bangs cut short, and this reveals a strange, black sith tattoo on his forehead. His face is somewhat attractive to look upon, except that his expression looks strict and hard. Physically, his attractiveness is also marred by three deep scars cut into his right cheek; even though these were made on his original body, over four thousand years ago, they somehow mystically reappeared on his cloned body, after he took up occupancy. His lean body is often garbed in black, rich-looking clothing. He often wears black armor on his torso, which looks to be made out of obsidian, and he is always in possession of a floor-length, black cape. Hanging from a belt, more often than not, is his lightsaber. Kun is rare among Sith, in that he carries a lightsaber with blue blades, rather than the typical Sith red. He always wears a glove on his right hand, and his left appears to be some variety of arcane machinery, a gauntlet made of metal and crystal, in the form of a hand.
