HISTORY
To the outside world, she is nothing more than a teacher, but this is just one of her guises, for she is really Nyx, a vampire. Her standard method of feeding often involved seducing a student, luring them to her home, and draining them of portions of their life, using her mesmerizing gaze to disable them. For centuries, this and other methods have worked, and she was a skilled warrior, to fend off those who try to destroy her kind, or fight back.
All of this changed when she did battle with Spider-Man Alpha, who found her feeding one evening, and chose to intervene. Though she fought him to a standstill, and fled as morning came, she could not know that this was not the end, for it was shortly after that that she chose Mark Devin as her prey. She got to know him in her history class, and she did persuade him to come to her home, but she chose not to feed on him, for some strange idea. Visit after visit, and she did not take from him. One close attempt even allowed her to smell him, sensing something she had smelled before; Spider-Man Alpha. She quarreled with herself over what to do; feed from him, kill him, or cut him loose. She finally decided that the reason, however strange, that she did none of these things was that she loved him. In him, she saw something of someone else she had known, long, long ago, before she was the being she was now, and one she had missed a great deal. When she revealed to Mark that she knew who he was, and that she was the creature he had fought before, he, too, was conflicted. Much like her, however, he felt a strange connection with her; not one born out of teenage desires, or forged through supernatural gazes, but something real and powerful, and so he stayed with her.
After some time, she trained him how to fight; there were those who would kill him for having been with her, while he just seemed to get into fights with others on his own. His own skill with martial arts, combined with her training in swordsmanship, and more orthodox unarmed combat skill, make him a stronger Spider-Man, as well, even without said sword.
From Devin's Perspective:
"You ever have one of those days where your teacher gets on your case for not having some bit of homework finished, and you want to say "Teach, at night, I fight crime, and fend off super villains. You really should cut me a little slack if I don't get a few math problems done", but you can't, because you need to keep your identity secret? Well, just imagine how it works when your teacher knows what you do? It's still not a valid argument. That's the pain of having a teacher know, and then spending your nights with them. Oh, and don't even ask about just wanting to spend a quiet night, hanging with your girlfriend..."
As the above bit demonstrates, Nyx takes her teaching role very seriously, even if she does often use it to feed her bloodlust. As well as being a strict combat instructor, she expects her protégé to excel in his studies; she won't let his night job of crime fighting be an excuse to sleep in class and shrug off homework or training. She is aware of his lax approach to his other years of high school, even being held back a year, and intends to make his last year of high school recover for all of the others. From Mark's end, he cares a great deal for Nyx, and often tries his best to perform well for her, and thus, he has, overall, succeeded. Where does he find sleep, you ask, between homework, training, work, and school? Well, he often asks that question, too. Mostly, it seems that she does just truly love him, and she wants to make sure that he is as good as he can be, both physically and psychologically. Book-smarts are useful, and he fights some very powerful foes. Nyx would be devastated if something happened to him, either through her acts (their "forbidden relationship"), or through her neglect. Seeing her everyday does make it a bit difficult for him, though.
Note: Nyx's Transformation - Nyx is a strange variety of vampire. During the day, all of her vampiric abilities go dormant; she has her weaker abilities, no drain, no reflexive dodge, etc, but she also suffers no vampiric weaknesses. She is not vulnerable to ultraviolet light, silver, or any other substance, anymore than an average human is (not that she has these vulnerabilities as a vampire, either). Also, regardless of the state of her feeding, during the day, she is not drained for not feeding. She has three white stones of health. As soon as she turns back though, after the sun sets, her appearance changes, her abilities improve, she gains her vampire powers, and any weakness steps in. Also, her transformation cannot be resisted. If it is daytime where she is, she is human, if night, vampire. Some amount of makeup can cover her vampiric features for night-based activities (parent-teacher conferences?), as well as her mesmerizing powers, but otherwise, she is then a vampire, detects as one to instruments designed to track vampires, and such.
The Origin of Nyx
Some people might wonder why I created Nyx. Well, here are the bulk of reasons why. First, I really like anime, and am just a bit of a perv. Thus, the whole "he's sleeping with his hot, teacher" and "he's sleeping with a slightly older woman" angles, as well as the "he's sleeping with a vampire" one (only anime would usually do that). I wanted Mark to have a girlfriend, but I wanted her to be important. She was maybe going to be some sort of MJ, either her daughter, niece, or some such cheese, but then I decided that this might be just a bit too lame, and so I settled for a total invention. I always rather liked the whole Spider-Man and Black Cat thing, and while I see why they never did hook up, I sort of pulled it in here, slightly, though this is slightly more Black Cat + Morpheus = hot vampire babe. Spider-Man should date someone just as interesting as he is, and mine does. Other people might dislike being kept in the dark about his identity, or be scared of the truth, so I quickly worked that out, but I didn't want said girlfriend to be jealous about Mark's celebrity (watch Spider-Man 3), so I gave him a girl who wouldn't have that problem, at least not often. Having her kind of stuff gave her her own interesting character traits, and history that is interesting, as well as bringing in some other conflicts Mark might otherwise be able to avoid. I feel it makes her more like another character, and not just another character aspect/facet. In the end, some might not like her, and she might even be just a little clichéd, but the fact is, I like her, and that is what matters most. ;)
