Mr. Sinister, one of the most hideous abominations ever to exist, does so because he created himself. Mr. Sinister began as a respected doctor of the mid 17th century named Nathaniel Essex. He was a happily married man, with a great deal of money and prestige. Living at Grey Hall, in London, he had everything he could want, almost. His wife, Rebecca Grey, was the daughter of a member of the House of Lords in Parliment. Still, as happy as he was, his lifework, understanding the mutations of humankind and its fast-evolution became an obsession. He found mutants down on their luck, and, bringing them to his on-site asylum, ran experiments on them. Rebecca was ill, and he frantically sought a means to save her, where no other treatment would. He was scoffed by great men, such as Charles Darwin, as well as the members of the Church. Finally, he used a concoction on himself. It resulted in his mutation into something...else.
Not trully a mutant, but certainly not human anymore, Essex discarded his name and fled from London, with Dr. Xavier (the senior) right on his heals. As his experiments had been described as "sinister", so did he choose to call himself. Over the last century and a half, Mr. Sinister has learned to add powers to himself. He has the most knowledge of anyone on Earth, in regards to genetic knowledge of mutations.
Sinister has a new obsession now. He wants DNA of the Summers' line. Jean Grey is a descendent of his late wife, who he never ceased to love, in one fashion or another. As for Cyclops, for reasons unknown, his optic blasts can bypass Sinister's healing abilities, as can Havoc's rings. Sinister has tried many times to fix this seeming flaw in his otherwise "perfect" power, but to no avail. If he has his way, he will crack the mystery, and use the DNA of Cyclops and Jean Grey to create the most powerful mutant ever, and under his control, too.
Mr. Sinister is strange among mutants; not only does he study mutations to an unwholesome extent, but, if he likes a certain power, and has a sample of the DNA that causes it, he can inject the substance into his body, and gain use of it. He is also the single most powerful regenerator on Earth, literally healing otherwise grievous injuries fast enough to watch, but also to fast for you to get away.
