Possessions: The Soul Edge (), fiendish armor
When most often seen, Nightmare appears as a large humanoid covered from head to toe in fiendish looking full plate armor, with only his incredibly enlarged, demonic right arm not covered in the armor. This huge, chitin-encased limb has two thick fingers and a large thumb. However, Nightmare was once a good warrior, and sometimes shrugs off the control of the Soul Edge long enough to engage in personal combat. During this time, he sheds all of his armor above the waist, except for the gauntlet on his left hand. Without this armor, Nightmare is revealed as a strikingly beautiful man, almost to the point of looking feminine. His right pectoral region is likewise covered in chitin, appearing as if it belongs to the demon Nightmare is slowly becoming. On the left side of Nightmare's chest, two wicked scars are visible running in a line almost from the left shoulder to his navel. Along these paths are also several burn-scars. These resulted from the battle Seigfred had with the Edge Master when he took the sword and became Nightmare. He has, as mentioned above, a stunningly beautiful face and long, blonde hair that reaches almost to his waist. His eyes are shockingly blue, and his teeth are white as pearls.

The holy warrior Seigfred sought to destroy the evil blade, Soul Edge, and did battle with its possessor, the Edge Master. After a long duel with the immortal, Seigfred finally delivered the killing strike, and moved to finish the huge, evil sword, but to do this, Seigfred had to pick it up, and in that moment, the malevolent spirit within it possessed him. Now, as Nightmare, he leads the forces of evil in campaigns against the forces of good. Every so often, Seigfred is able to wrest control of himself from the sword and act honorably, but this never lasts long, and he cannot get rid of the sword during these times. Even were he to set the sword down, it would make no difference; the sword's connection to him is now as strong as the bonds that hold planes together.
