3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Style Protoss

Protoss

Most Protoss in general look the same. They are roughly 6 to 6 1/2 feet tall, very thin, and rather alien in appearance. Their hands have four long digits, with two of these being like our thumbs, while their legs are built somewhat insect-like. They have what appears to be long, braided hair, but these are atually nerve fibers for their psychic power. They have scaly-type skin that is sort of a sandy tan color, and their eyes glow various colors. They have no mouths whatsoever.

Info Regarding All Protoss: All protoss units and buildings have the following traits, if applicable:

Psionic: all protoss have the psionic creature template added to them, as all protoss share the latent power of psionics. This will be in addition to the protoss's character class.

Class: All protoss begin as psion or psychic warrior, and these are both preferred classes for protoss in regards to experience and leveling up. Protoss who take levels of psychic warrior often are zealots, while those who take psion are high templar. The ones who dual-class both might become dark templar. Some Protoss also take levels of monk, but almost never of fighter (the monk is more to their way of thinking), and their are no spellcasters whatsoever, arcane or divine, among the Protoss.

Telepathy: All Protoss have telepathy and communicate that way only. They can speak with any creature that has intelligence in this manner. Its range is 1000 feet.

Shields: All protoss characters and structures are protected by psychic shields. This effect works like a stoneskin spell, except that it is permanent, psionic, and equals the character's or building's full hit point total. This effect can be temporarily negated with psionic powers, such as negate psionics or null psionics field. Otherwise, the opponent must deplete the shield before physical attacks can harm the character or structure. This shield recharges at a rate of 1 point/round. This is only for physical attacks; spells and psionic powers ignore this.

Type Specifics: Other than all the above, which all protoss have, the following are special of the individual units. They are as follows:

Zealot- Effective Full Plate, Psionic Blades (considered +2 modified brilliant energy wrist-mounted long katars). All zealots are psychic warriors.

Dragoon- considered intelligent construct (substitutes Cha bonus for Con bonus in regard to powers), Energy Cannon (considered +2 modified brilliant energy masterwork composite longbow, on a critical hit, target is affected with disintegrate). All dragoons were once zealots, and so are psychic warriors.

High Templar- Robe of the Templar (), Psiblast (similar to greater biocurrent), Psionic Storm (identical to arch-psion psionic energy discharge, only with a 10 ft radius blast range), Hallucination (psionic variant identical to the shades spell, costs 10 PPP's), Displacement (psionic variant, permanent version of the spell, unnegatable). All high templar are psions.

Dark Templar- Effective Full Plate, Robe of the Templar (), Psionic Blades (considered +4 zerg bane modified brilliant energy wrist-mounted long katars), Cloak (incarnated improved invisibility, can be negated temporarily, but resumes once negation ceases; cannot be permanently negated). All dark templar are psions or psion/psychic warrior dual classers. Many take rogue or assassin as well, if not already dual-classing. (This is not to say that a dark templar cannot be a psion/psychic warrior/assassin or rogue, it is just a matter of acquirring the levels to make any one class good enough.) Protoss do not have to abide by the alignment requirement for the assassin prestige class.

Archon- Permanent mage armor effect, Psionic Shockwave (identical to arch-psion psionic energy discharge at double power). All archons are made by uniting two high templar, usually near death, together. This union destroys their character class traits, minus their PPP's, and converts their Hit Dice to d12. They do, however, maintain their psionic creature template.

Dark Archon- Permanent mage armor effect, Mind Control (same as the psionic power thrall, except that no force save another dark archon can break it, ever. This power drains all of PPP's and shields, which must then recharge), no attack capability. Similar to archons above, all dark archons are made by uniting two dark templar, usually near death, together. This union destroys their character class traits, minus their PPP's, and converts their Hit Dice to d12. They do, however, maintain their psionic creature template.

High Archon- Permanent mage armor effect, Psionic Shockwave (identical to Psionic Storm, but twice as powerful, plus no radius). Mind Control (same as the psionic power thrall, except that no force save another dark archon can break it, ever. This power drains all of PPP's and shields, which must then recharge). All high archons are made by uniting one high templar and one dark templar, usually near death, together. This union does not destroy their character class traits, though it converts HD to d12.

Reaver- Effective Full Plate, Psionic Blades (considered +2 modified brilliant energy wrist-mounted long katars). All zealots are psychic warriors.

Observer- Effective Full Plate, Psionic Blades (considered +2 modified brilliant energy wrist-mounted long katars). All zealots are psychic warriors.

Air units and structures to follow later.

After reading the above, here are the descriptions of what each type is.

Zealot- Most Protoss are zealots. Zealots are the rank and file of the Protoss armies and populace. This is not to say they are considered lesser by their brethren, but they are lower on the totem pole then the templars. Zealots have psionic power, as all Protoss do, but they seek to use it more to augment their fighting ability then to be a true power with it alone. Any zealot is more than willing to give its life to save its people or world, and their battle cry is "My life for Auir". This is not to say they will throw their lives away, but they do not retreat in battle, unless ordered by superiors.

Dragoon- As said above, zealots will give their life in combat without a reservation. This is not to say that that sacrfice is in vain, nor is it necessarily the end of the road for the warrior. The Protoss have a means by which they can take the shattered remnants of a zealot and place it within a device something akin to a battle mech. This quadraped device is metapsionic, and can answer to the mental commands of its core as that zealot's body would have in the past.

High Templar- The highest of the Protoss, the high templar are the psychic masters of their race. High templar do not fight on the front line of the battlefield, but from the back, similar to most other races offensive spellcasters. Since their are no spellcasters among the Protoss, the high templar use their psionics to fill the void. They use mental power and their psionic storms to help defeat large forces, before the zealots and dragoons they command move in to clean up. High templar never dual or multi-class, except with psionic prestige classes (arch psion and metamind are the most common), as they believe their gift is already the most powerful thing in the universe, and seek only to improve it to the greatest extent possible.

Dark Templar- Relatively new and still often untrusted, the dark templar are high templar who had a falling out with the rest of their race and their ideals. The specifics of it are not spoken of to outsiders, but the dark templar are now back with their brethren, whether the other Protoss like it or not. The dark templar serve as the special forces of the Protoss. They seem somewhere in between the zealots and the high templar; they still wear armor, arm themselves with their rift blades, fight hand to hand on the field of battle, and many have levels of psychic warrior, but they all also have levels of psion, wear robes of the templar, and command soldiers. They also can merge into an archon form, the dark archon (q.v.). Dark templar also sometimes take levels of rogue or assassin, are more or less permanently invisible, and can strike from invisibility and not lose that invisibility. The fact that the Dark Templar severed their heaad-tentacles, however, has cost them the use of their psionic storm.

Twilight Templar- A 1 in one million occurance or sight, twilight templars have mastered both the beliefs of the high templar and the dark templar.

Archon- Though considered one of the most powerful forces the Protoss have at their disposal, the archon is not a prevalent sight. An archon is forged when two high templar are both near death. As a last-ditch effort to survive and defeat their enemies, two high templar will merge mind and body forever to attain the form of archon. Few high templar make this change because it requires two high templar willing to sacrifice the bulk of their psychic power forever, and only a few, near death in combat, are willing to make this sacrifice. The archon is viewed by its kin with honor, as they have made the ultimate sacrifice. Archons appear as burned-black high templars surrounded in a ball of blue energy. What psychic power they had has all been invested into their greatest attack, the psionic shockwave.

Dark Archon- Much like the archon above, the dark archon is a rare thing. A dark archon is forged when two dark templar are both near death. As a last-ditch effort to survive and defeat their enemies, two dark templar will merge mind and body forever to attain the form of dark archon. Few dark templar make this change because they are few in number and it requires two dark templar who are willing to sacrifice the bulk of their psychic power and all of their combat ability forever. The darkarchon is viewed by its kin with mixed honor and mistrust, as they have likewise made the ultimate sacrifice, but are of dark templar origin, and can now take over the minds of virtally any other being, even a powerful high templar. Also, their lack of combat ability makes it obvious that this mind control of enemies is what they are primarily for. Dark archons appear much as regular archons do, as burned-black high templars surrounded in a ball of energy, but where the archon is blue, the dark archon is red. What psychic power they had has all been invested into their greatest power, mind control.

High Archon- Almost unheard of in even the recent times, their can only be a handful of these beings in the whole of the Multiverse. A high archon is forged when a high templar and a dark templar are both near death. As with other forms of archons, they will merge mind and body forever to attain the form of high archon. Few make this change because while the dark templar are more or less okay with their brethren, the high templar are not all quite so with theirs. Many high templar would rather die than permanently taint their "pure" selves with the energies of the dark templar. When two come together who are willing though, the result is true power unbridled. A high archon has all of the powers of an archon and a dark archon (psionic shockwave and mind control). The high archon is viewed by its kin with mostly revoltion, as a high templar has fallen to fusing with a dark one, and even the dark templar are slightly intimidated, as they know that power corrupts. The fusion to high archon is forbidden by both sides, for their vastly different reasons, and it must be proven that it was of direst need otherwise, which is not easy to say the least. Should one be made, it loses all rights of a Protoss in regard to helping make laws, own property, or anything else, anything to deter this transformation from taking place. High archons appear much as regular archons do, as burned-black high templars surrounded in a ball of energy, but where the archon is blue, and the dark archon red, the high archon is dark purple.
