The Attakapas Indians were some early inhabitants of what is now Acadia Parish.
In 1805 when the Territory of Orleans was divided into counties the present-day Acadia
Parish was part of Opelousas County.But before it became Acadia it was part of St. Landry
Parish.
Farming is a big part of Acadia.It is one of the leading crop producers in Louisiana. Two of
the big crops that are produced are soybeans amd rice.There is also cotton, oil and cattle .

State Historical Markers

Crowley : Historic district listed on National Register of Historic Places.
Name came from: Pat Crowley, an Irish road-master.
By January 1888, it was incorporated as a village. The 1890 Census figures show that there were 420 inhabitants in Crowley. June 21, 1899 a charter was granted, incorporating it as a town.
In October there is the International Rice Festival.

Pouppeville :The town of Pouppeville was named after merchant Jules Pouppeville and it dates back
to the 1850s.

In 1805 when the Territory of Orleans is divided into counties the present-day Allen Parish is divided between the Neutral Ground and Opelousas County
Allen Parish was once part of Calcasieu Parish.Oberlin is the oldest town in Allen Parish
and was incorporated on Feb. 5, 1900, while still a part of Calcasieu Parish
Allen Parish Courthouse was built in Oberlin in 1912. The first mayor was Joseph Cevier

Ascension Parish is located in southeast Louisiana south of Baton Rouge.
It is in the heart of Plantation Country. In 1785 the population of Ascension was
about 1,000. In 1805 Ascension Parish was one of the original 12 counties that
made up Louisiana and it was one of the original 16 parishes.when the Territory of
Orleans was divided into counties the present-day Ascension Parish was part of
Acadia County.
Some of the early inhabitants of the Gonzales area where, French and Spanish
settler.In March 1977 Louisiana change Gonzales from "Town" to
"Incorporated City" and on August 17, 1977 Gov. Edwin Edwards officially
proclaimed it the Ciiy of Gonzales.

Bayou Manchac:Iberville returned from the Mississippi River to his fleet at Ship Island via this bayou in 1699.

Bocage Plantation:Built in 1801 by Marius Pons Bringier

Donaldsonville:Capital of Louisiana from January 1830 to January 1831. Town founded
by William Donaldson,in 1806.

Galveztown:Was a Old Spanish town at junction of Amite River and Bayou Manchac.

Gramercy

Houmas House: The Greek Revival mansion built by John Smith Preston in 1840. In the 19th century it was the state's largest sugar plantation in the late 1800s, producing 20
million pounds of sugar per year. .
In 1940 the house and remaining grounds were bought by Dr. Grorge B. Crozat
and he had the house and gardens restored.
Houmas House was the setting for the movie "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte .
Houmas House Plantation and Gardens Burnside, Louisiana

L’Hermitage:Greek Revival mansion built by Marius Pons Bringier.The house is name
after General Andrew Jackson’s home in Tennessee.

St. Emma Plantation: Listed on National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

In 1805 when the Territory of Orleans was divided into counties the present-day Assumption Parish was part of Lafourche County. Two years later it was divided and one portion of Lafourche was established as the civil parish of Assumption.
