Many flags have shaped the history of what was and what is now Louisiana


Hapsburg Spain-16th Century

In 1519, the Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez Peineda led an expedition along the northern shores of the Gulf of Mexico . He Reported discovering the mouth of a great river.

Bourbon France-18th/18th Century

The first expolorer to travel down the Mississippi River to its mouth was Sieur de La Salle a Frenchman. In 1682,he took possession of "the country known as "Louisiana,"
He named Louisiana in honor of his king , Louis XIV.

Bourbon Spain-Late 18th Century

In a secret treaty in 1762, France ceded its territory west of the Mississippi to Spain

Great Britian-18th/19th Century

In 1763, Great Britain acquired parts of Louisiana east of the Mississippi from France and Spain in the Peace of Paris that ended the French and Indian War.

Republican France-1803

The cost of maintaining distant colonies and worries about American that would have like to control the land led Spain to return the Louisiana territory west of the Mississippi in another secret treaty in 1800.

United States of America- Early 19th Century

On April 30, 1803, the United States purchased the vast Louisiana Territory from Napoleon for $15 million. Yhe purchase of Louisiana more than doubled the size of the United States.

Independent Republic of West Florida- 1811

In 1810, colonist to control of their area east to of the Mississippi River. It was part of Spain is West Florida Territory. That same year, is the republic joined the United States as part of the Louisiana Territory. The area is still referred to as the Florida Parishes. The independent Republic of West Florida flag is known as the "Bonnie Blue"

Independent Nation of Louisiana-1861
