The fumes that had been filling the rooms intensified slightly, making Yanagi Renji look up from his copy of Tale of the Genji, and glance over at the boy sitting next to him.
Fuji Syusuke was reading MachiavelliÕs The Prince. Personally, Renji didnÕt think he really needed MachiavelliÕs assistance.
ÒI think heÕs done,Ó RikkaiÕs strategist said.
ÒMmm,Ó murmured Fuji as he absently turned the page. ÒQuite likely. Did he ever decideÉ?Ó
Renji nodded.
Fuji looked up, pinning the Rikkaidai Fuzoku student with a laser-blue stare. ÒAnd?Ó he prodded.
Renji lifted one shoulder in an unconsciously elegant shrug. ÒAnd I donÕt divulge the data I gather in Équestionable circumstances.Ó
ÒAhh.Ó Fuji nodded, his features settling into his usual close-eyed smile. ÒInui is the same way.Ó
ÒOf course he is,Ó said Renji.
ÒI taught him everything he knows.Ó
Fuji would have inquired as to whether these lessons extended to areas beyond tennis, except that Inui Sadaharu chose that moment to make his entrance.
He was accompanied by a cloud of sparkly purple smoke.
ÒWell,Ó he said. ÒIt was a success.Ó
His pronouncement was met with expectant silence. Well, expectant on FujiÕs part.
If Renji didnÕt know all the details he was about to divulge, Inui would have been sincerely shocked.
ÒRenji and I will be having a boy.Ó
ÒHe will be a truly formidable force,Ó stated Fuji as he closed the covers of his book. ÒI will, of course, do my part as a surrogate uncle.Ó
ÒThank you, Fu Ð Renji, what are you doing?Ó Inui gave his longtime best friend a look.
Yanagi Renji looked up his cell phone. ÒHmm? Oh, IÕm calling Yukimura.Ó
ÒWhat on earth for?Ó
ÒI promised IÕd let him know,Ó Renji stated calmly.
ÒBesides,Ó he added as YukimuraÕs cell phone began ringing. ÒHe promised to give the baby lessons on how to manipulate the surroundings while appearing absolutely angelic.Ó
Fuji raised an eyebrow. ÒI can do that,Ó he said.
He heard chuckles from the other two. ÒWhat?Ó he asked, slightly affronted. ÒI can.Ó
ÒFuji,Ó began Inui. ÒNo one believes that youÕre the epitome of innocence and light, not after theyÕve really seen you play tennis.
ÒYukimura, however,Ó he continued, Òcan still pull it off. And does, regularly.Ó
ÒOh.Ó
ÒAh, Seiichi,Ó Renji said as his boyfriend picked up the phone. ÒGood news. ItÕs a boy.Ó
He listened for a moment as Yukimura softly asked him a question. ÒAh, let me check.Ó
He turned to Inui. ÒWill it be a normal incubation period, Sadaharu?Ó
Inui managed to look horrified despite his glinting eyeglasses. ÒGood God, no. What do you think I am? Three months, on the outside.Ó
ÒThree months,Ó reported Renji. He paused again. ÒYes, IÕll be home soon. I love you, too.Ó
Fuji and Inui managed to not look sickened by the display of affection, especially since it could have conceivably been worse. Yukimura, at least, was supportive of his boyfriendÕs Evil Plots.
What if, for instance, heÕd fallen in love with Ohtori Choutarou? All of their plans would have been for naught.
They suppressed convulsive shudders. The very ideaÉhorrifying.
Sanada Genichirou abruptly sat up in bed, sweat trickling down his brow.
His boyfriend muttered incoherently before squinting up at him.
ÒSomething wrong, Genichirou?Ó murmured Atobe Keigo as he sat up, raking his hair from his face.
ÒNightmare,Ó said Sanada curtly.
ÒWhat was it about?Ó asked Atobe. ÒDo you want to talk about it?Ó
Sanada shook his head. ÒRenji,Ó he started. ÒRenji and Inui were having aÉa baby.Ó
Atobe paled. ÒThatÕsÉhorrifying,Ó he said.
ÒAnd,Ó continued Sanada. ÒFuji Syusuke was there! And they called Yukimura!Ó
He turned to his boyfriend. ÒHold me, Keigo. IÕm scared.Ó
Atobe made soothing noises. ÒThere, there,Ó he said. ÒIt was only a dream.
ÒJust a dream.Ó
