“Mom? Can we talk?” Callie approached her mother cautiously.

“Yeah honey, what is it?”

“Well, you know how I like acting and everything. And how I’ve always wanted to be an actress? Well, Dan, he invited me to stay with him in California. I could live in Los Angeles and become an actress. He said it was ok if I moved in right away.” Dan was her older step-brother. A struggling actor in Los Angeles. It was Calissa’s dream to live in L.A. and become an actress. She was only a junior in high school, but that never phased her.

“Absolutely not honey. It’s much too dangerous. At least wait until you’ve finished college here in Georgia.”

Callie had known that this was what her mom would say. But she also knew that as soon as she told her dad that this is what her mom didn’t want, he would give his blessings and help her move there. It was a constant battle between the two of them. Who got to be the better parent. But Callie had made her decision. She was going to finish high school and go to Los Angeles. She would go to UCLA, film and acting school. She had already planned everything out. She didn’t really need her mother’s consent; after all, she would be eighteen.

“Fine mom” She went into her room and picked up the phone. Luckily she had her own line because her sister was home from school and bound to be tying up the house line. She dialed the number she had grown to know so well. After months of searching, she had reaped the rewards. Whoever said no good came of obsessions? She had found Elijah Wood’s email address and they had started a chain of letters. Most of them were friendly, sometimes they argued over politics and such and sometimes she was receiving advice. Eventually, she had gotten his home number out of him. Since then, they had abandoned email for the more satisfying phone-conversation. She called him, and told him what was going on. She had only used Dan because her mom was more likely to even think about it if she though Callie would be living with him. In all honesty, Dan didn’t have room for Callie. He had a wife and child and only a two-bedroom apartment. There was no way she could live with him. But she had already decided that she would rent an apartment.

“Hello?”

“’Lijah? It’s Cal. I just told mom about moving to Los Angeles.”

“What did she say?” She told him the entire story, including her living plans. Then she asked how much it was to rent a one bedroom apartment in L.A. She was shocked to find that it ranged anywhere from $900 to $1500. There was no way she could afford that and Elijah knew it.

“You can come live with me you know.” He offered, before thinking, but he knew that he wanted her there and that this was the only way she could stay. It would only be temporary, right?

“I could never do that!!! I’ll find a place, or a roommate.” It was less expensive to attend UCLA if you lived off-grounds she had found out.

“No way! Roommates are so unreliable. At least you know I’ll always pay the rent on time. Come on, it would only be temporary, until you find some place else that you can afford. Besides, I want you here, come on, please?”

After an hour of debating it, he finally got her to reluctantly agree. The last two years of high school flew by for Callie, and before she knew it, she was packing her stuff. Her mom still didn’t approve, and her dad was still paying for shipping her stuff to L.A. It was a four-day drive in her little Honda Civic, one she was dying to make. By they end of the first day, she thought she was going insane. She had nothing but music to keep her company. When she pulled into a motel, she changed into her pajamas and set up her laptop. Her best friend from back home was online and their conversation made her cry. Then she sent an email to Elijah, saying how bored she was and how she didn’t think she’d be able to get up in the morning. Then finally she was able to drift off to sleep.

RING!!!! “What the hell? Who’s calling me?”

RING!!!! “Godammit, where’s my phone?”

RI- “Hello?”

“Morning!! Get up and start driving or else you’ll never get here!!”

“ELIJAH!!!!! It’s barely seven o clock in the morning, what the hell are you thinking?”

“Oh come on, I was just tryin to wake you up. I got your email.”

Grumble “Thanks”

She got up and drove on. The next three days were not as bad as the first. She did have her music and every once in a while, Elijah would call and they would talk for a few hours. Finally, she made it to L.A. Elijah met her at a coffee shop and brought her to apartment.

When she opened her eyes, it was getting light outside. She washed her hair and climbed out of the tub. She got dressed and walked into the kitchen. The first thing she did was walk over to Elijah and put out his cigarette. He hardly noticed……….he was focused on something else………French Toast!! Her favorite. He looked at her when she opened the fridge to get some orange juice and did a double-take. She was wearing her favorite outfit. A white peasant top and some tight, dark blue jeans with black laces at the bottom. She didn’t have her shoes on yet, but he knew she would wear the black boots with the metal flowers on the heels. He loved that outfit……..
