Chapter 4 – Bite Me

Friday night, Callie was at home typing up a paper at her computer. It was ten o clock and her red nails flew at the keyboard, stopping only to brush her cat’s black tail away from the screen. He was sitting on top of the monitor. The phone sat next to the computer and her blanket lay across her crossed legs. She jumped when the phone rang.

“Hello?” She couldn’t think of anyone who would be calling her on a Friday night and she was sure that all of Elijah’s friends new he was out of town.

“Hello Calissa.” She couldn’t recognize the voice.

“Who is this?”

“Don’t stay up too late Calissa.” Click. Needless, to say, she was a little creeped out. But she decided not to let it get to her, kids were making prank phone calls all the time. The phone rang a second time. She sighed when she picked up. “Hello?”

“Hello Calissa.” A different voice, but still not one she knew. She sighed again.

“Who is this?”

“You should get some sleep Calissa.” Click. This time it was she who hung up the phone. “Assholes.” She muttered to herself. The phone rang yet again.

“What do you want?”

“Hello Calissa.” A third, different voice that she didn’t recognize. She didn’t even bother asking who it was before she hung up. And again…..it rang. “What the fuck do you want?” she screamed into the phone.

“Whoa. Down girl. You always answer the phone like that when I’m not around? I’ll get an answering service or something.” Finally a voice that she knew.

“’Lijah!! I’m sorry, it’s just that I got these three phone calls in a row and they were really starting to scare me. I thought it was another one of those.

“Wait, three? What did the voices sound like? Did you recognize them?”

“It was three different voices. The first one was deep and British, the second I have no clue what it was, and the third was definitely Irish or Scottish.”

“You jackasses!!!” she heard him shout wherever he was. “I was just calling to check up on you, but I’m gonna go beat the shit out of someone right now. Bye!”

“Alright, bye.” Callie was just a little more than confused.

Callie found herself missing Elijah in the few days that he was gone. It was over a weekend so she didn’t have much to do. It was Saturday afternoon and he wasn’t expected back until late Sunday night. She went to the movie store and got every single one of his movies that she could fine. Then she bought two pizzas and a six-pack of Cherry Coke.

“Shhh! Cal’s probably asleep, we weren’t supposed to be back until tomorrow.” Elijah warned his three friends as he slid the key into the lock. Billy, Dominic and Orlando were gonna crash in his living room, because their hotel rooms weren’t ready yet. When they walked in, Elijah smiled at the scene that met his eyes.

Calissa was asleep on the couch. She was in a t-shirt and those dark jeans she loved so much. That damn green blanket was draped over the back of the couch, a corner of it laid across her waist, covering her midriff where the shirt had rode up. Empty cans of Cherry Coke and two pizza boxes, one half full, were on the coffee table. The credits for “The Bumblebee Flies Anyway” were rolling on the tv screen and a stack of at least eight movie boxes sat on top of the VCR.

“Looks like somebody has a crush.” Said Orlando with a smirk.

Callie, who had been watching them sleepily with one eye, startled them when she spoke.

“With all due respect Mr. Bloom,” she said tiredly, “bite me.”

She then rolled over and fell asleep to the gales of laughter radiating from Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan. They had each had one or two….or five glasses of coke and scotch to soothe their nerves for the long flight.

When she woke up again, the VCR clock told her that it was 4:17. She could hear voices and saw a light coming from the kitchen. She stood up, wrapped her blanket around her and toddled into the kitchen to get some orange juice. When she walked in, she want to double up with laughter. Billy was trying to carefully wrestle Dom for what appeared to be the last cup of coffee. Dom was taller, but Billy, it seemed, had no qualms with climbing.

“Let go!”

“You let go!” She walked over to the refrigerator to get some orange juice, but abandoned the thought when she found the last Cherry Coke.

“Oh hell, I’m Dom and this is Billy. Nice to meet you.”

“Hi. I’m Calissa. Just call me Cal or Callie, everyone does.” They sat down and talked, Dom and Billy apologizing for the phone calls the night before. Basically they just got to know each other until the Cherry Coke was gone and it was 5 am.

“I don’t have any classes on Monday, ‘Lij will probably wan to do something, so I’m gonna catch a few more hors of sleep. G’ni- well, g’morning!”

She went back to the couch and curled up under her blanker. Soon, she heard Billy and Dom stumble back to her room where Elijah had decided they would crash, since she had claimed the couch. A few minutes later, when she had finally begun to drift off, she heard the water turn on and the warms harmonica music of Blue Traveler float through the apartment. Then the singing started.

“AND MOST OF ALL, MY GOD, HOW DOES SHE MAKE HER EYES DO THAT?”

Callie’s eyes flew open as she remembered the other guests of the house. She jumped off the couch and ran down the hallway, her blanket streaming out behind her. Elijah poked his head out of the shower and blinked when the music went off. Callie was just standing there, cord in hand.

“I may be used to your odd hours, but the other guests are not and you should be more considerate. What are we doing today?”

“Yes mother. Sorry, um, I thought we’d go to the beach and then to a club or two tonight. That cool with you?”

“Yeah, fine with me, keep your voice down and let the rest of us sleep please.”
