Kyp Durron, pretty straight forward. This is the first drawing I ever had the guts to send to an author (Kevin J. Anderson), and I recieved a prompt and positive response, inspiring me to draw even more. I cannot express to the author how encouraging an email can be when it's from someone you respect and admire, who took time out of their day to reply to a fan. Props to my bud Andy Salmon, who's dark evil little eyes inspire me literally out of this world.
Kyp and Exar Kun, did this drawing as last page art for a short lived online Star Wars magazine. If you can't tell, the figures in the back are Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider. Ominous scene inspired by The Dark Apprentice by KJA.
Morose Kyp, self-explanatory downcast drawing. Inspired by Kyp Durron's overwhelming everpresent sense of depression, repression and regret. That about covers it ;)
Kyp A'Fishin, as much as I love this drawing, it is thee reason I will never take brush to printer paper again. From this work onward, I dedicated myself to watercolor paper in a fit of vengeful passion. This is still one of my favourite pieces of art, but would have been one of my little 'masterpieces' had I not botched it up with my.. damning cheap nature. By the way, I drew, inked and painted this whole work to the sound of Simon&Garfukels 'The Boxer' on repeat. How freaky is that? Inspiration.
Kyp and The Dark Man, If only I could bring myself to include dialogue bubbles. Exar, "Moody?" Kyp, "Piss off." Exar, "You insolent little snot." I did this drawing all to the raucous tune of 'Strawberry Fields Forever', by the Beatles. Gives a feeling of rumbling chaos and discontented youth. Ah, the individual, yet still young and impressionable Kyp Durron ;)
Evil Kyp, I seem to have fullfilled every little goth girl's dream with this one. If only he sucked blood or owned a dark palace and a pack of wolves. But ne'er fear. It's just Kyp. I've been working to perfect my divinly inspired little 'kyp is evil pose' and while I am quite pleased with this one, it's not living up to my mental masterpiece, so expect more practice evil poses to follow. I love this drawing though, even if my hands still hurt from penciling all that black shiney stuff. Drew this listening to Air's, "Playground" off The Virgin Suicides soundtrack.
Kyp Durron and 'Fen' Nabon, Drawing Kyp Durron is like this.. curse. Usually when I sit down and try to draw him, he comes out looking all (#&!-ed up beyond belief. Then I'll be idly doodling on the margin of a piece of notebook paper when a face will come to life and I'll anxiously have to transfer the sketch to white paper or (if that can't be done) finish the sketch on the notebook paper- explaining some of the totally unprofessional air of a few of my 'masterpieces'... This was one of those... and turned out to be one of my favourite drawings yet. I sketched it on a connection flight to Washington, DC and drew the majority of it, sprawled out on the bedroom floor of my friend Chirse (Massachusetts, the friend I was flying to see ;) I dedicate this one to him, Chirse Menz, and to Chris Cassidy and Tish Pahl who provided us with an excellent Kyp Durron story, Simple Tricks! Wow, what a long honkin paragraph. I'm gonna have to learn to condense...
Durron of The Dozen-and-Two Avengers, If you've read Vector Prime or any of the other dark tide books, than you know that a 32 year old Kyp Durron commands a non-NR squadron called, well, GUESS. A squadron comprised of ace pilots and then Master Kyp and his Apprentice Miko Regalia (the 'two' in the title : Jedi). This is my attempt at cobbeling together a flighsuit for Kyp Durron's bio on rebelpilots.com. Note: I kept the cloak/cape. Pay attention to the shimmer-ishness, it's the cape that Han gave to Kyp in Dark Apprentice.
Force Lift, Another one of those divinely inspired Kyp drawings. Seeing as how Kyp tends to be a toughie to draw, a good Kyp Durron drawing (for me, atleast) only appears by will of the muse! I took a pen to paper and 'slash-slash-slash' done. Anyway, babble-off, I title this one 'force-lift'. I don't even know if the term is valid, but it sounds so nifty, probably cause it harkens to 'fork-lift' or something retarded like that. I had originally drawn one of my character's behind Kyp, but I didn't want to piss anyone off, so I'll save that drawing for another day. You're probably asking what that big thumbnail of Kyp's face has to do with forcelift? Nothing really, I had to zoom in on the face and bask for a moment. Most of my drawings look better when scanned about 200%, but for size sake, I reduce them down and lose a lot of detail in the process. If you really are that anxious to see a fully detailed version of this piece, just email me and you can have the big ol' 200 percenter. Inspiration: it's about damned time I do some more Jedi'ish cool lookin action poses!
Death Of A Dark Apprentice, this pretty much illustrates the sense of Kyp that made me such a fan. Baptism by fire. In Kyp's unique case, it's very much like he rose easily to the darkside and him coming back to the lightside was much more like a 'fall'. This is, actually, the first real drawing of Kyp I ever did, and I scanned it in quite a while ago and sent it to Andy. Who promptly lost it. So blame the kinkles in the paper on me having to dig through my files and re-scan. This is, of course, the scene from Champions Of The Force where Kyp is lifted from the ice-encrusted message-pod which would have surely been his tomb.
Kyp and Ghitsa Dodger, following hot on the heels of 'Kyp and Fen'. Collect all five! This picture is for Jessica (ultimate Kyp fan) Barber, a scene taken from the short story Simple Tricks. This is the first time I've drawn Ghitsa and I've never seen a picture of her before. So, I pretty much winged it, following details provided by Jessica. Yes, I know Ghitsa's supposed to have 'spikey-ish' hair, but hey, artistic license. Maybe next time.
I'm Only Sleeping, Yup! Like the Beatles song. Isn't it frightening how easily I can associate Kyp Durron with the Beatles? Must be all that Helter Skelter craziness. You people are probably asking, by now, why all my Kyp drawings look different in features, one after the other. Well, there are so many facets to Kyp, I kinda struggle with his 'image'. Every drawing I make, I try as hard as I can to stay true to his identity. So you can count on finding something new (preferably disturbing) in every piece I do, maybe someday it'll harden into a solid form. I drew him in this pose to make a statement. Yes, meaningfulness! Kyp is such a deadly, malcious soul, I thought I'd depict him in a moment of human vulnerability. Since he projects the force to shield his emotions while he's awake, I thought I'd draw him sleeping. And it's right to hope that maybe sometimes (one moment in a million), Kyp Durron knows some peace. I'm sure Rob is wretching in response. I'll make sure to draw you a dark evil one, next. Note, this is one of the very very few drawings I've done based on a human model... thankyou. Well, actually, he was sleeping, too. He had no choice. *cackle*
