Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos
-General Info-The Story
Richard LeGrey is the noble King of the Gladstone and
ruler of the White Army. The King and his council fret of the rumors they
hear about Scotia, an evil hag and ruler of the Dark Army, and her uncovering
of the Nether Mask- a magical ring of extreme power that allows its wearer
to shape-shift. But, this is no rumor, for the Mask was found deep within
the mines, causing many vile creatures to be released into the lands.
Now Scotia can assume the shape of any person, or creature...
After Richard learns
of the Dark Army's findings, he seeks a champion to retrieve a magical
necklace from an old friend in hopes to destroy the hag and stop her
evil plots of taking over the Gladstone Kingdom. But after failing to
find this Ruby of Truth, the champion returns to Gladstone only to find
the Scotia has already begun her vile plot- by poisoning the King! Protected
by a spell from his council, the King is in need of an Elixir that can
only be retrieved by his champion, whom is set out to explore the lore
and mystery of the surrounding lands in hopes to save their beloved
King and stop Scotia from victoriously gaining control of the Kingdom.
You're that campion. And by the way... Scotia hates you.
The Characters The player is to choose one of four pre-developed characters to serve as the King's champion, each having thier own strengths and weaknesses in three catagories: Magic, Protection, and Might. Ak'shel is Dracoid. Since the Dracoid race is very good with magic, he will naturally be able to learn magic faster so he can cast the most powerful spells. He lacks in fighting skills and rouge abilites (seeing secrets). Kieran is Huline, a half man, half cat race. He is the most agile and quick of all the heros. He will be able attack enemies a lot faster and dodge blows more than any of the others. Michael is the natural fighter. He will be able to do the most damage with weapons. However he is the least proficient with magic. Conrad is the most rounded hero. He has minimal skilled in all three areas.
AutoMap Guide The map is reffered to as the Magic Atlas, found at the begining of the game. With each level explored, the map records, square by square, the area around the character, as well as showing hidden buttons, secret walls, dangerous pits, ect.
General Hints
Game History Developer: Westwood Studios Lands of Lore is a role playing game (RPG) that was originally released for DOS back in 1993. Since then it has won numerous awards and received much acclaim. At the time, it was one of the biggest and most detailed games available. It took full advantage of the new CD-ROM format with full voice digitization including voicing done by Patrick Stewart portraying King Richard. The game interface is superbly done, by far the easiest and smoothest at the time. Many RPGs tend to have complicated interfaces that take hours of learning to master. But not here, simply click on the sword or magic symbol to use it. Other features include a compass, and a very nice auto-mapper which is a necessity in such a huge world. Unlike some RPGs, Lands of Lore places more emphasis on adventure and less on the complexities of character and party selection. And every location in the game has it own small piece of music (BELOW), and the sound effects aren't bad either. Lands of Lore was later re-released in the Virgin White Label series but had been revamped with the inclusion of a soundtrack with very respectable voices added. Westwood Studios have made role playing games (RPGs) for a long time. Best known are Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2. When SSI planned to make a third one, Westwood chose to make their own RPG without the restrictions from the D&D rule set. The efforts ended up with LOL. Originally planned as a series of eight titles, but only ended up with three.
