Dictionary of Paintball Terms


A

Agitator: The paddle in an electric hopper that feeds the paintballs into the gun.

Air Source Adapter(ASA): The place where the constant air screws into the marker.

Anodizing: An anti-corrosion coating put on aluminum through electrolysis.

Anti Double Feed: A device that prevents more than one paintball from entering the chamber.

Anti Siphon Valve/Tube: A tube inserted into a CO2 tank that prevents liquid CO2 from entering the marker.


B

Back Check Valve: Creates a seal when removing an empty 12 gram resulting in a few extra shots while changing the 12 gram.

Ball Flag/Jock: A small triangular shaped "flag" that is used as an anti-double feed device.

Barrel: A tube that connects to the front of the marker and is used to guide the paintball once it leaves the chamber.

Barrel Adapter: A collar that allows opne type of marker to use another company's barrel.

Barrel Extension: A tube that fits over the existing barrel to increase its length.

Barrel Plug: A device that is inserted into the barrel to prevent a paintball from exiting the barrel in case of an accidental shot in a goggles-off area.

Blow By: Any amount of gas the "blows by" the paintball when it leaves the barrel.

Bolt: Loads the paintball into the chamber, and seals gas inside the marker when it is fired.

Bolt Knob: A knob that connects to the bolt inside and protrudes out of the marker so it can be cocked from the outside.

Bore: The inner size or material of a barrel.

Bore Drop: A marker that the chamber bore is the same size as the barrel bore.

Bottomline: An ASA that connects to the bottom of the grip frame on a marker.

Bouncing: Running into a Sup Air bunker and transferring your energy to the enemy player on the other side resulting in him losing his balance.

Breech: the part where the ball drops into when the bolt is in its most rearward position.

Bunkering: Running up to an opposing team player while he is behind a bunker and shooting him.

Burst/Rupture Disk: A safety device used to prevent an air tank from rupturing in the event of an increase in pressure.

Butt Plate: A plastic or metal cap put on CO2 tanks so they can be used as a shoulder stock


C

Caliber: The measure of the inner diameter of the barrel.

Carbon Dioxide(CO2): A gas used by many paintballers as the main air source for their marker.

Chamber: The part of the barrel clost to the bolt.

Chronograph: A piece of equipment used to measure the velocity(speed) of a paintball.

Closed Bolt: This refers to a semi-auto action where the bolt returns to the cocked position after firing the paintball.

Cocking Handle: The knob used to cock the bolt on a semi-auto marker.

Contstant Air(C/A): A CO2 tank or N2 tank that screws into the bottom-line.

Contstant Air Adapter: An adapter that allows a marker that does not have an air source adapter to use a constant air source.

Cup Seal: The part of the valve system on a constant air tank that seals the air in the tank.

Cyclic Rate: The number of shots taken in one second.


D

Delrin: A self-lubricating plastic used in the making of pump-action markers.

Direct Feed: The direct feed allows paintballs to be loaded into the marker without having to tilt or rock the marker.

Direct Feed Nipple: The tube used to mount a feed system to the marker.

Dot Sight: A term for a sight that uses a small dot for an aiming reference.

Double Feed: When two paintballs are loaded into the breech causing one of the paintballs to break.

Double Trigger-:A trigger that allows the shooter to use both his index and middle fingers to pull the trigger.

Downstream Bleed: A device that allows air to be drained from a remote before it is disconnected.

Drop Forward: A bottomline that "drops" the air tank forward to make the marker and air system smaller.


E

Elbow: A bent tube that connects to the direct feed and is used to feed paintballs into the marker.

Electropneumatic: A marker that is controlled by a batery and a circuit board.

Euro-Grip: An M-16 replacement grip which has finger grooves.

Expansion Chamber: A chamber that prevents liquid CO2 from entering the gun.


F

Face Mask: The part of the goggles that protect the nose, mouth, and chin.

Feeder: the name for a bulk feeding aparatus.

Feed System: A feeding aparatus that includes an elbow, and a feeder.

Field Strip Screws: Screws with a knob on the end so that the marker can be taken apart without any tools.

Fill Station: A large tank with a special device used to fill smaller tanks. Filter: A "screen" that keeps dirt from entering the marker through the air system.

Flag Station: An area on the field where teams start from and/or where the flag is hung.

Fog: The condensation that collects on the lense of a goggle system.

Fore Grip: The part of the marker that is held by the non-firing hand.


G

Gas Efficiency: How efficient the marker uses the gas from the tank.

Gas Through Foregrip: A foregrip where the hose travels through the grip to enter the marker.

Gear Bag: A bag specially designed to carry paintball gear.

Goggle Fan: A fan put inside the goggle system used to cool off and/or dry off the player's head.

Goggles: The part of the goggle system that contains the leanse and head strap.

Goggle System: The goggles and surrounding forehead, chin, ear, and cheek protection.

Grips: The palstic cover that covers the grip frame.

Grip Frame: The metal frame that is covered by the grips.

Grip Screws: The screws that hold the grips on the grip frame. Gun Case: A case that carries a paint marker and a air tank.

Guppy: Another name for a loading tube


H

Hammer: The piece inside the marker that is released under spring pressure to strike the valve which releases the air.

Hammer spring: The spring that releases the hammer.

Harness: A system worn around the waist designed for carrying loading tubes.

High Pressure Air(HPA): High pressure, normal breathing air used as an alternative to CO2.

Holster: A special pouch used to carry a small, extra paint gun.

Hopper: Another name for a feeder.

Lense: The clear piece of plastic that protects the eyes.

Light Up: To hit a player multiple times.

Loading Tubes: Tubes used to hold extra paintballs while in a game. The loading tubes are placed in a harness.

Lower Receiver: The part of the marker frame that includes the grips, trigger, trigger guard, and grip frame.

Low Pressure System: A system with an expanded valve chamber used to decrease the amount of pressure inside the gun.


M

Marker: The correct term for a paintball gun.

Motorized Loader: An electric loader with an agitator.

Muzzle: The end of the barrel where the paintball leaves the barrel.

Muzzle Brake: Gaps in the muzzle that prevent "blow by" resulting in increased accuracy.


N

Nelson Action: Another term for a pump action gun.

Neoprene: A type of rubber foam used as tank and loader covers.

Newbie: A new player.

Nitrogen(N2)(Nitro): A pure nitrogen alternative to CO2.


O

Offset Sight Rail: A sight rail that is mounted to the left or right of the marker in order to see "around" the vertical feed if the marker has one.

On/Off Valve: A valve on a tank used to turn the tank on and off.

Open Bolt: Describes a marker that the bolt reamains in the rearward position between shots.

O-Ring: A neoprene, nylon, or rubber ring used to seal certain areas of the marker.


P

Paint Fill: The liquid that fills the paintball.

Paintball: The liquid-filled ball that is shot from paint markers.

Paintball Field: The field where most paintball games are played.

Paint Check: When a ref checks a player for a hit.

Paint Grenade: A piece of surgical tubing filled with paint. When the pin is pulled and it is thrown, it "explodes" after hitting the ground, spraying paint in every direction.

Parts Kit: A small kit with miscellaneous parts used to maintain a paint marker.

Preformance Tuning: "Tuning" or upgrading the valve to make it more gas-efficient.

Pin Valve: The valve on a C/A tank.

Pressure Gauge: A gauge that measures the pressure inside the tank. It also meausers how much air is left in the tank.

Pump: The grip used to manipulate the pummp-action on a pump-action marker.

Pump Action: A marker that the bolt is moved by "pumping" the pump.

Pump Rod: The piece that connects the pump to the bolt.


Q

Quick Disconnect: A piece that allows a player to disconnect and reconnect a remote from bottomline of the marker.


R

Race Gun: A gun that rapidly fires a series of paintballs. Rate of Fire(ROF): The number of paintballs fired in a period of one(1) second.

Rear Cocker: A marker that has the cocking rod on the back of the marker.

Rebound: When the hammer "rebounds" and hits the valve after hitting the valve for the first time.

Reciever: The major assembly(upper and lower) of the marker.

Recreational Paintball(Rec-Ball): The non-competitive area of paintball.

Regulator: A device used to "regulate" the amount of air entering the gun.

Remote System: A high-pressure hose used to connect a tank to the bottomline. The tank is placed in a harness on the back of the player, compacting and lightening the marker.

Removable Barrel: A barrel that can be easily screwed on or off of the marker.

Reticle: The crosshairs on a sight.

Return Spring: A spring that returns the bolt to its rested position.


S

Scope: A telescopic sight.

Sear: The piece that holds the hammer in the cocked position.

Semi-Automatic: A marker that is fired by pulling then releasing the trigger the trigger. After the trigger is released, the marker re-cocks itself.

Sight Rail: A piece of metal that lies longways on the marker used to mount a sight.

Siphon Tube: A tube inserted into a CO2 tank which only allows gaseous CO2 to enter the gun.

Slide Check Valve: A valve used to release the gas from a remote system before it is disconnected from the marker.

Snap shooting- Popping out from behind a bunker, firing a few shots, and then jumping back behind the bunker.

Speedball- A type of paintball game, normally played indoors, that the players are in close proximity.

Spring Feed: A system that uses a spring instead of gravity to load paintballs into the marker.

Squeegee: A rod or cable used to clean the barrel of a marker if a ball breaks inside of it.

Stick Feeder: The original paintball loader. It is a long, horizontal tube that connects to the direct feed.

Stock Feed: A feed system that satisfies the rules applied to stock markers.

Sup' Air- A paintball field that uses air-filled bunkers

Suppresive Fire: Fire used to keep an opposing player's head out of the path of the paintballs.


T

Tank: The term for a constant air source.

Tank Cover: A neoprene cover placed around the tank used to protect the tank.

Thermal Lense: A lense that does not fog from moisture.

Thread Saver: A plastic or metal cap placed over the valve to prevent the valve threads from becoming damaged.

Tourney Cap: A cap the is put over a velocity to prevent a player from changing the velocity during a game.

Trigger: The part of the marker that is pulled to fire the marker.

Trigger Guard: A small pice of metal that protects the trigger from accidentally being pulled.

Trigger Shoe: A small cover that increases the area of a trigger making it more comfortable for the player.


U

Under Cocker: A small rod on the bottom of the marker that connects the pump to the bolt.

Upper Receiver: The part of the marker that icludes the main body, barrel, hammer, bolt, and valve.


V

Valve: The area where the gas enters the marker.

Valve Body: The system that surrounds the valve.

Valve Chamber: The area in the valve where the air "waits" to be released into the marker.

Valve Spring: The spring that holds the seal closed until it is struck by the hammer.

Velocity: The speed of the paintball.

Velocity Adjuster: A knob or screw that is used to adjust the velocity of the paintball when it leaves the marker.

Venturi Bolt: A bolt that has a series of small holes instead of one large one. It reduces the risk of the paintball being broken when the air hits it.

Vertical Feed: A direct feed that is mounted vertically to the marker eliminating the use for an elbow.


W

Walk-On: A player or group of players that show up at a field and play without prior reservations.

Wiping: The act of smearing a paintball into the clothes so it appears that the player was not hit. In one simple word "cheating".

Woodball- A type of paintball, played outdoors, in the woods.
