Part 427

"Mr. Callahan to see you," Dawn said, ushering the tall, well-dressed businessman into Heidi’s office.

"Ms. Johansson, you’re a difficult woman to reach," he said, reaching for her hand.

The petite attorney removed her reading glasses, folded them and lay them on her desk. "And you are an elusive man." She was interested to see exactly where this discussion would lead, and curious as to what was behind it all.

"I have my reasons."

"What can I do for you?"

"You get right to the point, don’t you. I respect that." He smiled, looking her over as if to see what made her tick.

"Have a seat Mr. Callahan."

"Robert," he corrected her. "I’ll get straight to the point. I need to know how to reach Rebecca Carter."

"Why?"

"I have my reasons, personal reasons. I know where she is, but my efforts at contacting her have been thwarted by her husband’s management."

"Good. That means they’re doing their job. Why is it so urgent that you reach Mrs. Carter?"

"As I said, it’s personal. Not something I care to discuss with anyone else."

"Then I’m afraid I can’t help you. Good day, Mr. Callahan." Heidi stood behind her desk, signaling that his time was up.

"I assure you, I have no evil ulterior motives, it’s just a very private matter that I need to discuss with her."

"How do you know my client, Mr. Callahan?" Heidi’s curiosity was piqued and she was determined to get to the bottom of this.

"I don’t, at least not personally. We’ve never actually met."

"Then I fail to see-"

"Here’s my card, Ms. Johansson. I know that she’ll be returning to this area within the next month and I’d like you to set up a meeting with her. I’ll expect to hear from you soon. Let me know the time and the place, and I’ll be there. Oh, and if at all possible, see to it that her husband is there as well."

"You’re a Backstreet fan, Mr. Callahan?"

"Hardly," he grinned. "Just see that it’s taken care of."

Heidi looked up from reading his card to say goodbye, but he was already out the door. Picking up her phone, Heidi buzzed Dawn at the front desk. "Dawn? Come in here, we have work to do." From her desk drawer she removed a thin file similar to the one Robert had held in his hands just a short time ago. Hers was labeled Robert David Callahan.
