Part 438
As the Boys signed autographs, the girls went to get settled on the bleachers behind their dugout. Sarah had been chosen to keep the score and be the unofficial coach since she couldn’t play and was now getting the line-ups straight for both teams.
"They are so cocky. They think that just because they are pop stars, we’re gonna take it easy on them and let them win," sneered Number 10.
Laughing, Number 5 cracked, "Not a chance. This should be a walk in the park. Did you get a load of the freak with all the tats?"
"Oh god, yeah! And the short one…man, I bet he’s a fairy with the high voice."
Sarah’s blood started to boil hearing them talk about AJ and Howie like that but she kept her mouth shut.
"When do we play the Devil Rays?" asked Number 10.
"Saturday in a double header."
Something in that last comment made Sarah look closer at the names in the book and at the men standing around her getting ready for the game. Like a bolt of lightning, she realized exactly who these guys were and her heart sank into her stomach. This was NOT going to be a ‘friendly’ game at ALL. These guys were out for blood.
With the line-up set, Sarah headed back to the guy's dugout and motioned for Becca to come down.
Seeing the look on Sarah’s face, Becca instantly panicked. Approaching her, Becca asked, "What’s wrong? Are you okay?"
"I’m fine but the guys won’t be."
"What’s that supposed to mean?"
"That’s a professional team they’re getting ready to play and they are out for blood."
"How do you know they’re professionals? Jeff said last night that it was a local radio station the guys were supposed to play."
"No, Jeff said that the local radio station SET this up, for Kevin’s birthday and to raise money for JWR. He didn’t say the DJs would be playing. I am going to KILL Jeff for this."
"But how do you know they are professional?"
"When Russell and I were together, he played pro and I remember these guys. They are KILLER. They travel all over the country playing for benefits as well as playing regular league games. I’d be willing to bet that the local radio station was going to play them until they found out the Boys would do it."
"We need to tell them, Sarah. They could get hurt."
"It’s NOT a contact sport for Pete’s Sake, Bec."
"But we still need to tell them."
"What are they gonna do? You know they aren’t gonna back out of it NOW. Let them play and we’ll tell them later….MAYBE. It serves Kevin right for not letting me play."
"You should NOT be playing, especially since this is a pro team. You could get seriously hurt."
"I’d have been fine. Here come the guys. Do NOT say anything."
Becca looked at Sarah questioningly. "Do you know what you’re doing?"
"If it gets ugly, I’ll tell Howie."
Becca started to go back to her seat but Nick caught her in his arms. "Aren’t you gonna sit down here with us?"
"There’s not enough room, baby," purred Becca as she ran her hands along his sides. Standing on her toes, she gave him a tender kiss. "Good luck, Nick."
Sarah mumbled to herself, "You’re gonna need it."
Howie sat beside her. "What was that, ‘Angel’?"
"Nothing, ‘D’. You guys ready to play?"
