Part 456
Things were going along just fine. Probably too fine, which was when they should have expected something to happen. Becca was bopping to the beat, watching from behind the screams and flirting outrageously with Nick every chance she got, and Sarah and Lynne were right down front, doing the same with Howie and Kevin, as were Ali and Sonja. The boys were relaxed, they were having fun, the crowd was having fun … and they let their guard down. Just for a moment, but never underestimate the tenacity of a fan.
It all happened so quickly that they could only react in speechless shock. It was during the final encore of "Drowning." Sarah and the others were mesmerized, their men were singing just to them and it was perfect. Becca was sniffling offstage, knowing that even though Nick couldn’t see her, he was singing just for her. This song killed her. She’d never hear it again without remembering the filming of the video right before Garrett was born. She wiped her eyes and reached for a tissue and that was when all hell broke loose. She heard Billy’s "oh shit" and looked up in time to see two fans rush the stage.
One was all over Nick, but security managed to drag her away before any harm could be done. Kevin didn’t fare so easily. His fan had a better grip and had probably been the all-state wrestling champ in high school. Before security could get to him, he was on the ground, trying his best to avoid locking lips with this perfect stranger as Lynne watched from the front row, horrified. To add to her horror, Sarah was laughing hysterically. Lynne was all set to lay into her until she followed Sarah’s line of vision and saw AJ and Brian rolling around on stage in perfect imitation of Kevin’s little fan encounter. Howie, god bless him, kept right on singing as if nothing had happened.
"Billy!" Becca screeched. "Do something!"
"Bec, I can’t go out there. The venue security is there, they’ll handle it."
"Billy, they’re going to get hurt!"
"Security?" he smirked. "Most likely."
"Billy, that’s not funny," she glared.
"Yeah," he grinned widely, disagreeing with her, "yeah it is." He turned his attention back to the action as Howie tried his best to salvage what was left of their final number.
The crowd lost it as Howie winked at Sarah and changed the words: "I can’t believe, some girl just jumped on Kev …"
The second girl was hauled out of the arena, and before the closing strains of the song security decided it would be a good time for the girls to make their exit. All they needed was one of the wives or girlfriends getting hurt. Nope, that wouldn’t do at all.
