Part 463
Sarah lay next to Howie listening to him snoring softly. Sleep had come so easily to him. Why couldn’t she fall asleep? She was exhausted and Howie had done everything he normally did for her – singing and caressing her stomach. They’d even made love but sleep still eluded her. No sense staying in bed if she couldn’t sleep.
Carefully, she eased out from under his arm and started to go out to the living area. She stopped at the door and looked back at him sleeping peacefully. She still had trouble believing how incredibly lucky she was to have Howie in her life. He had so much faith in her and he had taught her so much about love. As she stood there, the melody that she and AJ had been playing around with ran through her mind and words began to come to her. She moved to pull the covers over Howie and headed out to the living area.
Howie’s guitar was leaning in the corner and she picked it up along with her notebook. Howie had taught her how to play and now, sitting on the couch, she began to play softly. In the notebook, she wrote the words. It all flowed so easily.
Half an hour later, Sarah sat and played the song, singing the words as she did. It was perfect saying everything she felt for him.
As she finished, she heard him in the back and looked up to see him stumbling sleepily out to where she was.
"I’m sorry, ‘D’. I didn’t mean to wake you," she said as he sat down behind her wrapping her in his arms.
"It got cold without you next to me. Are you okay?"
"I just couldn’t sleep."
"What were you doing?"
"Working on a song," she answered setting the guitar down and leaning back into his arms. She ran her hands across his arms as he held her.
"When do I get to hear it?"
"Denver."
"Ready to come back to bed?"
"Uh huh."
Helping her up, Howie led her back to their bed where they climbed in together. Lovingly, he took one of the extra pillows and tucked it under Sarah’s belly and then wrapped her in his arms. Kissing her lightly on the neck, he held her close.
"I love you, ‘D’," she whispered sleepily.
"I love you too, ‘Angel’. Go to sleep now."
Sleep came easily this time, her heart in the words of the song for the man who held it in his hands.
