Chapter 33
“Do you have everything?”
“Yes,” Sarah sighed, answering Becca’s question for about the twelfth time.
“I’m sorry, I just want this to be perfect.”
“Sis, it will be, now will you calm down?”
Becca continued, not even listening. “Because last years’ was so awful, and I wasn’t there and this year has to be perfect and-”
“REBECCA!”
Total silence reigned as Becca dropped the vase she’d been holding and whirled about to stare at Sarah. Broken glass was everywhere, and as she and Sarah both glanced down at her feet, they simultaneously began to apologize.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-” “Becca, I’m sorry-”
“It’s Nick’s birthday,” Becca whispered. “It has to be just right.”
“Sis, it’s all going to be beautiful and Nick will love it. Now relax.”
“What if-”
“Don’t make me hurt you, Bec.”
Becca began to giggle. You’ll have to catch me first.” She looked at Sarah’s girth and began to laugh out loud. “Oh god, I’m sorry, it’s just …” She continued to giggle at the look that Sarah shot her.
“I’m glad you’re amused by all of this.” She rolled her eyes and struggled to get up out of her chair, huffing and puffing. “How about a hand? Please?”
Becca kept a totally straight face as she began to applaud, finally doubling over in hysterical laughter. “I’m … sorry …” she gasped, “but your … face…” She kept laughing as Sarah struggled up out of the chair under her own power.
“Nick’s meeting us there?”
“No! He’s coming by here for me. You’ll all be there when we arrive.”
“Bec, are you sure a surprise party is a good idea?”
“No, but he’ll get over it.” Laughing again, she grabbed her car keys. “Come on, lets get you home so I can pick up the sitter. You sure it’s okay to leave GT tonight?”
“Of course, Bec. Ashlee is spending the night and can deal with him if he wakes up. And Jesse will probably take over, anyway.”
“Ashlee doesn’t have a chance, does she?” The two women giggled as they finished running their errands, and Becca dropped Sarah at her front door. “Now rest this afternoon, okay?”
“Yes, mom.” Sarah rolled her eyes as Becca stuck out her tongue and made a face. “Save that tongue for Nick, I have a feeling it’ll get plenty of use after the party.” She laughed as Becca blushed and drove away, and headed inside for a nap.
