From the unsuccessful
Zaku Marine Type, Zeon's engineers had learned that the standard
mobile suit design, though it worked well enough in space
and on land, was ill-suited for the underwater environment.
To extend Zeon's dominion to the waters that covered 70% of
Earth's surface, a new series of amphibious mobile suits was
created from scratch. These new designs featured streamlined
silhouettes and heavy armor to withstand undersea pressures.
Thanks to water cooling, amphibious mobile suits could be
equipped with more powerful reactors than those of normal
mobile suits - powerful enough to support built-in beam weapons.
The first mass-produced
amphibious mobile suit was created by the developer of the
Dom, the Zimmad Company. The Gogg's huge body housed two mega
particle cannons and a pair of torpedo launchers, and its
retractable arms were tipped with sharp claws. Its ballast
tanks could be filled with water for cooling purposes, allowing
the Gogg to operate on land for short periods. With these
features, the MSM-03 Gogg was the first "true" amphibious
mobile suit and would set the stage for all underwater combat
suits to come.
