The pilot of the Wing Gundam, the boy known as Heero is the most grim and serious of the Gundam pilots. His true name is unknown, but for this mission of revenge he has been code-named after the martyred leader of the space colonies. Raised by the scientist Doctor J, Heero has been trained since childhood to be a ruthless killing machine, equally proficient in mobile suit piloting, personal combat, demolitions, and computer hacking.

Though Heero's upbringing hasn't quite managed to squeeze all the compassion out of him, he is nonetheless callous towards his allies, and cold-blooded towards his enemies, and almost suicidal carelessness of his own life. His unexpected reluctance to kill Relena, after she discovers his identity, is the first step in Heero's gradual reclamation of his own humanity.

Duo Maxwell

The pilot of the Gundam Deathscythe, Duo is as jolly and happy-go-lucky as Gundam pilots get. But despite his friendly nature, Duo earns his "God of Death" nickname when he takes on Alliance and OZ soldiers in battle.

Prior to Operation Meteor, Duo was part of the space going salvage organization known as the Sweeper Group, and on Earth he is assisted by the Sweepers' seafaring kinsfolk. When there is a lull in the fighting, Duo happily returns to his salvage-merchant's trade. His black wardrobe distinguishes him; his yard-long braided ponytail, and his minister's collar.

Trowa Barton

The pilot of the gun-toting Gundam Heavyarms, the boy who calls himself Trowa is the most mysterious of the Gundam pilots. Calm, cool, and detached, he seldom speaks and never smiles. Trowa falls in with a traveling circus troupe as cover for his terrorist mission, finding employment as the world's most dispassionate clown. Trowa is a gifted and fearless acrobat, and these abilities also prove useful in his alternate occupation as a Gundam pilot.

Despite his youth, Trowa is an experienced professional soldier. His preferred combat tactic is to stand his ground and spray the battlefield with an endless hail of bullets, though every now and then he'll dispatch an enemy with his acrobatic trademark move - a mid-air triple spin, ending in a deadly knife slash.

Quatre Raberba Winner

The friendly, empathetic pilot of the Gundam Sandrock, Quatre is unusually tenderhearted for a Gundam pilot. He is the only son of a wealthy family of space colony builders, with 29 older sisters and a stern pacifist father who disapproves of his going into combat. Though Quatre himself abhors bloodshed, he feels compelled to fight to protect his loved ones.

While Quatre lacks the fighting prowess and ruthlessness of his fellow Gundam pilots, he does have excellent family connections, almost unlimited cash, and a troop of forty loyal underlings at his disposal. His gentle personality quickly wins over his fellow Gundam pilot Trowa Barton, and he eventually becomes the leader of the Gundam pilots.

Chang Wufei

The stern pilot of the Shenlong Gundam is the proud offspring of a legendary warrior clan, who were exiled from China to a decrepit space colony by a fearful government. Relena soon decides to continue the pacifist work of her true parent, and becomes a leading advocate for peace and nonviolence in an increasingly chaotic world.

Zechs Merquise

The masked man known as Zechs is an ace mobile suit pilot of the Alliance's elite Specials force, which is in reality a front for the secret society called OZ. Having earned the highest marks in the history of the Specials' Lake Victoria military academy, received the first two-rank promotion in the organization's history, and acquired the nickname "Lightning Baron" for his exploits, he is a hero to the Specials' members and the trusted friend of their leader Treize. But for all his fame, Zechs is shrewd and cautious, wary of taking unnecessary risks or underestimating his enemies.

Zechs's mask hides a dark secret. He is actually the son of King Peacecraft, heir to the Sanc Kingdom and Relena's long-lost brother. OZ will eventually give him the opportunity to avenge the death of his father and the destruction of his homeland, but what path will this charismatic warrior take after his long-sought revenge is obtained?

Treize Khushrenada

An aristocrat's aristocrat, the infallibly elegant and cultured Treize is the leader of both the elite Specials force and the secret society OZ that lies behind it. He's also a director of the mysterious Romefeller Foundation, the industrial combine that sponsors the Specials, controls OZ, and manufactures the Alliance's armaments. But Treize has his own agenda apart from the Romefeller Foundation's simple lust for world domination; he believes that war is a noble pursuit, and seeks to harness the destructive forces he's unleashed for the betterment of all humanity.

As befits his noble breeding, Treize is a gentleman and a chivalrous warrior, adored by his underlings and respected even by his bitter enemies. He has a long friendship with Zechs, and goes to some lengths to protect his old friend when Zechs's more eccentric activities draw the attentions of the suspicious Romefeller Foundation.

Lady Une

Treize's loyal aide and agent, Lady Une eagerly attends to her master's every need, from drawing his bath to assassinating his enemies. She is as cruel and merciless to her enemies as she is devoted to Treize, and her zealous suppression of Eastern European rebels has earned her the nickname "Fiery Une." On occasion, her enthusiasm earns her gentle rebukes from the more chivalrous Treize.

Later in the story, another side of Lady's personality is revealed. Taking off her glasses and letting down her hair, she becomes OZ's saintly ambassador to the space colonies, bringing a message of peace, love, and strength through armed self-defense. This gentle persona isn't just a pose, but a genuine split personality; in effect there are two Lady Unes, one as sweet and meek, as the other is venomous and cruel.

Lucrezia Noin

Like Zechs, Noin is a graduate of the Specials' Lake Victoria military academy, at which she earned marks second only to those of the Lightning Baron himself. After graduation she became an instructor at the academy, where she trains new Specials recruits in the art of space combat. Despite her own fighting skills, Noin dislikes war, and often intercedes with Treize to rein in Lady Une's excesses.

Somehow, Noin has discerned the secret of Zechs's true identity, and she is fascinated with her flamboyant former classmate. When she encounters Zechs again after more than a year's separation, she happily becomes his sidekick, and soon takes his sister Relena under her wing as an extension of her loyalty to Zechs.
