Strange Bedfellows- Chapter 6

By Erin McDuff

ALLEY

THURSDAY, 9:33PM

Lt. Van Buren nervously scans the alley that now surrounds her- nothing moves, nothing makes a sound. She could feel the danger of this place deep in her bones.

Anxiously, she puts the walkie-talkie to her mouth, "Lennie, how are you guys doing?"

"Oh, we're doing just peachy...Never better..." Lennie's grumpy voice crackles.

"Who got hit?"

"Agent Mulder."

"Figures...Have you moved forward any?"

"No, we've stayed put. We don't plan on going on until we know where this girl is. She's kind of pinned us for the moment, caus' we have no idea where she's at."

"Wonderful...," sighs Van Buren into the radio.

More thunder rolls over-head causing Van Buren to look skyward for half a second, "Why do I feel like I'm in a really bad horror film? All I need now is some nut-job welding a knife and we'd be all set."

Our view pans from Van Buren to the alley surrounding her. Something moves in the shadows to her left. She looks in the direction of the movement and strains to see the cause of the disturbance through the darkness.

"I'm not alone here, Lennie," Van Buren anxiously whispers into the radio as she aims her weapon to the left.

Out of Van Buren's sight a light cuts through the night. The light comes from a flashlight carried by McCoy as he makes his way down the alley. A crisp breeze tousles his graying hair. His quick, purposeful steps slow as he realizes the insane and suicidal nature of his pursuit.

"I'm going to get myself killed... I'm not a cop... What the Hell am I doing??? I gotta get--"

BANG! BANG! BANG!

We watch as McCoy runs toward the gunfire, now wielding the large, metal flashlight like a baseball bat.

"GET OFFA ME!!!" roars Van Buren to her powerful and armed attacker.

The Lieutenant has sustained a gunshot to her right shoulder. She has managed to return fire twice but both shots have missed their target due to the injury to her shooting arm. Her attacker then charged forward, sending both tumbling to the ground. The ensuing struggle is now decidedly one-sided, as Van Buren's badly bleeding arm is weakening her. Beside them lies the remains of Van Buren's radio, testimony to the force at which the officer was originally hit.

"Wanna learn how to fly?" the assailant hisses, menacingly.

"Not really. I hate airline food," growls back Van Buren as her fist lands squarely on her attacker's face. But to Van Buren's surprise and horror, the punch seems to have no effect except to further enrage the creature. She tries once again to throw the person off but with no luck. She has been firmly pinned to the ground. Her gun lies out of reach near her former radio.

"Its just not your lucky day is it, Pig? Ya know I'm gonna kill you and they're never gonna catch me. Just like they never caught the one who got me..."

Van Buren hasn't the breath to waste to respond and can only watch as a evil, twisted smile of victory crosses the monster's face.

In their pleasure of tormenting the Lieutenant, the attacker hasn't noticed McCoy's quiet approach. With an amazing burst of speed and strength, he lunges at the monster and hits his quarry with such force that they are both sent flying. McCoy is back to his feet with surprising quickness, flashlight still in hand. The attacker, completely caught off guard, tries to make a run at McCoy but is stopped short as McCoy takes one major league swing with the flashlight. A deafening crack signals that the flashlight hit it's mark. It recoils in pain but McCoy doesn't let up and takes another swing. A blood-curdling scream indicates that the weapon and the creature have connected again. Suddenly the alley behind them is filled with light-

"FREEZE!!!" yells the familiar voice of Lennie Briscoe.

McCoy doesn't do anything, though. He now fully appreciates the danger of this thing and he is not about to take his attention from it.

Briscoe is about to bark at their suspect again when he realizes that the suspect isn't the suspect.

"Jack? Is that you? What the Hell is going on?"

"Get Anita help!" McCoy orders as he nods toward her, "And get me a light over here!"
