Spirulina
Spirulina
is a blue-green algae (Cyanophytacea) found in most tropical regions of the
world, particularly in areas having mineral rich waters.
Spirulina algae is especially rich in vitamins A and B, several minerals and is
very high in proteins (60% or more). It also contains significant amounts of the
fatty acid GLA which is important in organ development and for the proper immune
response to disease process.
Spirulina, fed on a regular basis, will result in improved color and better
survival rates, an increase in the immune responses to disease-causing process
and better grow rates. Kidney and liver functions will be improved due to the
high levels of Phycocyanin present. Approximately 15% of Spirulina, by weight,
is phycocyanin.
I feed Spirulina year-round to my birds. I add it to the egg-food (dried) and
the birds eat it readily. Once breeding season starts, I add it to the egg-food
I make, so the babies in the nest can benefit from Spirulina.
The youngsters develop faster because of the protein content (60% or more) and a
deeper coloration is achieved on the feathers because of the beta-carotenes
found in Spirulina.
Spirulina can be bought at any health food stores.
I am a distributor for Spirulina in South Florida.
