Welcome to the Book and Writing Area!

Children look at and read books, simulate reading books from memory and picture cues, listen to stories, and make up and write their own. The Book & Writing Area is a cozy spot where they can look at books or magazines, either by themselves, with a friend, or with an older person who is reading aloud to them.  They can use story props to re-enact and retell stories in their own words, while others write and illustrate their own books and stories.  Even preschool children, who will "write" using scribbles, are expressing themselves.  This area is great beside the Art Area, so the children can use the Art Materials as extra writing supplies when they need them.  It should be in a  quiet spot away from vigorous play.  Lots of natural light and soft seating, or large cushions on the floor, for a cozy reading corner!

When selecting books from the library and bookstore, or making your own, consider the following:

  • Picture books
