The 331st Fighter Interceptor Squadron was reassigned to Webb Air Force
Base from Stewart AFB on June 15, 1956. At that time the 331st
was equipped with F-86L Sabres and was charged with defending the
Southern border of the United States.
In the spring of 1960 the unit converted to
the F-102A and TF-102A Delta Dagger.
In February, 1963 the 331st converted to the
F-104A/B Starfighter. In March, 1967 the unit was redesignated
the 4760th Combat Crew Training Squadron. The mission changed as
well; training Jordanian Air Force pilots in the operation of the
F-104. In the summer of 1967 the 4760th was disbanded as a result
of Jordanian puilots being called home due to the 1967 Arab -
Israeli War.
Webb AFB was closed on September 30,
1977. As of 2009 the 331st FIS alert hangars still stand on the
west side of the Big Spring McMahon Wrinkle Airport.
