After her parents divorce she and her brother, James Haven Voight, were raised mostly by their mother. Jolie began modeling and acting at a young age. She modeled in New York, London, and Los Angeles until she finally settled in and began attending the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute at age 12, then later New York University for acting.

     Jolie landed her first feature film starring role in Hackers(1995) as a high-school aged computer hacker. On the set of hackers is where she met her first husband, Johnny Lee Miller, She and Miller were married in May of 1996 where she reportedly wore a black wedding outfit. Jolie and Miller's marriage ended in 1999 because of "relationship problems" but they continue to remain friends.

     Jolie continues to star in films such as Gia(1998) and Pushing Tin(1999). Jolie met her current husband, Billy Bob Thorton. She and Thorton eloped in 1999 to Las Vegas and had their wedding dinner at a fast food restaurant.
