~*~*~*~*~*~ Chapter One ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Rude Awakening ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Asuka. Rei. Misato. Father. Death. Life. Mother. Second Impact. Evangelion. Reborn. Asuka. Mother. Ritsuko. Trapped. Love. Hate. Angels. Kaji. Kaworu. Murder. SEELE. NERV. God. Father. These words, these images streamed through Shinji’s subconscious. They haunted him, and they made him who he was. Shinji awoke stubbornly from his dream as his SDAT clicked over. He sat up slowly, looking around his room. It looked odd in the moonlight. He gazed around the room, his eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness. He climbed out of bed clumsily. It's hard to be graceful at three in the morning. The Angels were gone, he had destroyed the last of them when he had killed Kaworu. He walked out of his room slowly, pondering the events of the last few weeks. He looked up to see Asuka's door, and sighed lightly. Asuka was still in the hospital after her mental breakdown. She was alive, but barely. He sat at the table, pondering the battles against the Angels. So much damage had been done. He wondered if it was really worth it at all... Tokyo 3 lay in ruins, and so many lives had been lost, and so many friends had been hurt. Touji would never be the same again and Rei... Rei was another story. All Shinji could think about was that tank in Central Dogma and all the Rei dolls. This Rei, whatever she was, wasn't the Rei he knew. Shinji's world, what he thought he knew, had been shattered like a pane of glass and Shinji was left alone to pick up the pieces. Alone in the dark. Without warning, the phone rang out, startling Shinji. He wondered who would call him so early in the morning. He stood slowly and regarded the clock once again. “Far to early for a social call” He thought as he lumbered over to the phone. "Hello?" "Shinji! Get down here now! There's an emergency!" the voice on the other end ordered. It was Misato, and from all the alarms going off in the background, Shinji knew there was trouble. "I can't... I won't." Shinji replied quietly. Why should he get back into that monster that had brought him so much pain? "Shinji, you have a job to do, now get down here and do it!" She fired back, her anger building by the second. "I... I said no, leave me alone!" Shinji cried out, slamming the phone down and storming back into his bedroom. He had really thought that she actually understood him, that she could understand why he couldn't pilot that thing, especially not after what he had to do to Kaworu. * * * * * With a furrowed brow, Misato slammed the phone down, shaking her head. She knew how hard it was on Shinji to pilot the Eva, but he was the only one who could do it. Asuka was in a coma, and even if she weren't, she had become a shadow of what she once was. Then there was Rei, or whatever 'that' was, but Unit 00 still wasn't ready to deploy and she was worried about sending Rei being able to synchronize with Unit 01 or Unit 02, but anything was worth a try. Something was terribly wrong and Misato knew it. For week or so, the command center had seemed calm, almost too calm. Then out of nowhere, NERV had lost all of its forward outposts, without so much as a warning. The target was still out of visual range, however, the sensors were able to pick up that it was indeed another Angel. Everyone in the command center was unnerved at this revelation. Kaworu Nagisa was supposed to have been the last Angel. None of this made any sense. "Ritsuko, I need to know what is attacking us, now!" Misato called out. "We just don't know Major, all our sensors are down and it isn't in visual range. All we know is that it's an Angel. When I get the information, I'll be sure that you're the first one to get it!" Ritsuko yelled back. Ritsuko was running around frantically, trying to figure everything out. This new Angel seemed to worry her in a way that Misato had never seen her worried. However, in the chaos that was the Command Center, there was one constant: Commander Ikari seemed as cool and collected as usual. * * * * * Commander Gendo Ikari sat solemnly at his desk, his figure stoic and unnerving, his hands folded in front of his mouth, his gaze shielded behind his glasses. Sub Commander Fuyutsuki was particularly disturbed by Commander Ikari's calm. "How can you be so calm in the light of all that's happening?" Fuyutsuki asked. Gendo sat calmly, so Fuyutsuki, growing more nervous by the second, continued. "This isn't supposed to happen." Fuyutsuki continued, a slight quiver in his voice. "Ikari, what are you thinking?" Fuyutsuki asked. "In losing the Lance of Longinus, in attempting to accelerate Instrumentality, even in building the Evas, we have interrupted the order of the Dead Sea Scrolls," Gendo said calmly, taking a break to let what he said sink in, "We should have expected this." "Does that mean that all our work was for nothing?" Fuyutsuki shot back worriedly. "Have we doomed humanity to an abysmal fate such as this?" "No Professor, we will be victorious, as always. The children will triumph." With that, Gendo picked up the phone. "What is the condition of the second child?" he said, listening for an answer. He nodded, contemplating. "And the first?" he waited again, then nodded "And the Third Child?" he waited, a scowl crawling across his face. "Get the third child here immediately. If he refuses to come, you are authorized to use force." ***** Major Katsuragi's line in the command center rang out abruptly. She ran to it, picking it up. "Yes?" "Send out Unit 02 with the dummy plug in it. Prepare unit 01 for the arrival of the Third Child." Commander Ikari ordered. "But Sir, I don't think that he'll come." she responded softly, then continued, "Even if he did get in, he would be useless as a pilot. He wouldn’t do it, I’m sure of it." "Irrelivent. Do it before it is too late." With that, Commander Ikari hung up the phone. Misato shot a glance up to his desk, but he was already back on the phone, talking to someone else. Misato shook her head and gave the order to prepare Unit 02. Just as the dummy plug was being inserted, the Angel came within range. "Oh my God!" Maya called as the image of the nineteenth Angel filled the screen. It appeared as a cyclone of cold, dark energy. As it moved through the countryside, it picked up trees, houses, and basically anything in it's way and sucked it into the funnel. However, all that came out was something which appeared to be snow. Upon closer examination however, it was anything but snow. In truth, it was spurting cold ash from its conquests into the sky. This ash covered the hillside like fresh-fallen snow and blocked the sun out as well. A cold shadow descended upon Tokyo 3 as the monstrous being stopped four kilometers outside of the city. "What... what is that thing doing Ritsuko?" Misato cried, her voice trembling slightly. She looked across the room to Ritsuko, who merely stood there, shaking her head. "Ritsuko, I need to know what the hell that thing is so we'll be able to fight it!" "It..." Ritsuko stuttered slightly, gazing into a computer screen, "It doesn't even register... It's as if it isn't even there. It's taking up negative space. If not for our visuals and the blue signature, I would tell you that it wasn't even there!"
