Legend of Atlantis
Atlantis, according to PLATO (Greek philosipher), was an advanced civilization which resided on an island. And in one day, the island sank and it's people were gone forever.
In Escaflowne, Atlantis was an advanced civilization, so advanced that they created a machine which made their thoughts and wishes become reality. This machine made them sprout wings, and they could fly. They also had pendants (like the one Hitomi has). Everyone in Gaea were descendants from Atlantis (although they believe they are not). It was thought that a direct descendant of the Atlantians was a sign that destruction of the city, their family, or the world of Gaea was coming soon.
The trouble was, that the Fate Alteration machine had overpowered the Atlantians and destruction had come to Atlantis. So, using the pendants and power, the remaining Atlantians created the world of Gaea, a world from dreams.
The planet Gaea was where the Earth and the Moon hung in the sky (that was called the Mystic Moon) as seen in the picture to your left.
