 History of Saurashtra

History:

Saurashtra is listed in Vedas and anciant scripts such as Mahabharata as “Saurashtra” Lord krishna made Dwarika town in saurashtra. It is also a part of Indus vally/harrapan civilization known to be 5000 years old. Dwarika and loathal are such indicative locations.

Prabhas patan/Veraval is famous for Somnath temple which was robed and broken repeatedly by muslim invadors and a historical location related to lord krishna. Lord krishna died in Saurashtra.

Saurashtra is famous for Asiatic Lions. At a national park about 100KM from Rajkot, resides about 340 lions. The forest lodge at sasan is a nice place to stay and one can explore the Gir Forest from there.

Further 100KM from Gir Forest, near town of Una is an island called DIU, Liberated in 1962 from the portugues rule now developed for tourism.

At the time of india’s indipendence, Saurashtra had number (over 60) of kings ruling since ages. Saurashtra was one of region of india which never came under direct rule  of either Muslim or british invadors. Kings of were powerfull and had their own rail road, curruncy and police.

At the time of independence in 1947, Saurashtra State was formed and RAJKOT was the State Capital. During creation of “Language States” in 1952, Saurashtra was dessolved to form a State of Gujarat which included Gujarati Speaking areas of the old Bombay State.
