How do I know when my child is ready
for toilet training?
Each child has a unique timetable for becoming
toilet-trained. Most children are ready between 24 - 30 months of
age.
You
know your child is ready when he/she:
Passes stools at about the same time each day.
Is able to have a dry diaper for at least 2 hours
at a time during the day and wakes up dry after a nap.
Makes certain facial expressions when urinating
or passing stools
Lets you know when a diaper is dirty and asks to
have it changed
Seems eager to please and can follow simple instructions
Tells you that he or she wants to use the toilet
or wear "big kid" underwear

When you think your child is ready,
here are some tips to help make things go more smoothly:
|
Get your child a potty chair. Let the child
get used to using the chair by having him or her sit on it with a diaper
on when he or she is passing stools or urinating.
Let your child watch you (a girl) or his father
(a boy) or a sibling of the same sex use the toilet. Talk with your
child about what you are doing.
Select clothing for your child that is easy to
take off. Clothes with elastic waistbands or easy-to-open fastgeners,
such as velcro, work best. Pull-on diapers are also helpful.
Reward every success with hugs and words of praise.
Accidental wettings and soiling are common in the first few weeks, but
don't scold or punish your child when they happen. Keep a very casual
attitude. Tomorrow will bring a new day!
