Fun things to Do with the Letter Gg

Activities & Crafts:

Oscar the Grouch
Make this cute character with a green pom pom and googly eyes.  Attach the pompom to an empty film canister for his trash can.  To make an Oscar finger puppet, glue the pompom to the bottom of the film canister, removing the lid, so a child can slip a finger or two inside the canister.

Grandparent's Day
Ask parents to send pics of their children's grandparents to daycare.  Talk about grandparents.  Maybe ask a grandparent to visit!

Make a Growth Chart
Make a grow chart from heavy cardboard.  Tack it to the wall and measure all the kids.  Another actvity you could do is have the children lay down and measure each other  with a length of yarn, cut and save it to take home.  Who is the tallest?  Who is the shortest?

Letter Gg Box
Decorate a cardboard box with the letter Gg on the side.  Inside the box place things, or pictures of things, that start with the letter Gg. Let the children name items as they are pulled from the box.

Make Glitter G's
Cut large G shapes out of heavy paper or the cardboard from empty cereal boxes.  Have the children paint the shapes green.  Sprinkle green or gold glitter on the shapes while the paint is still wet.  Shake off the extra.

G Collages
Let the children cut out pictures of things that start with Gg.  Glue them onto green construction paper.

Making Green
Place small amounts of yellow and blue posterpaint or fingerpaint inside a ziplock plastic bag. Put sealing tape over the zip part to prevent  "leaks".  Let the children rub the bag between their hands and discover the "magic color" they can create.  More Color Ideas

Wrap Gifts
Let the children decorate paper bags to make gift bags.  Or decorate plain paper to make gift paper.  Wrap up items that begin with "g" such as gum, gumdrops, etc. Let them take them home!

Gingerbread  People
Cut gingerbread people shapes out of brown construction paper or brown paper bags. Give one to each child. Have the children decorate their shapes with felt pieces, buttons, ric rac, sequins, fabric scraps, etc. OR Let the children cover their shapes wih glue and sprinkle on dried tea leaves, coffee grounds or cinnamon.

Grandpa's Spectacles (sent to us by email - Thanks, Jennifer)

Here are Grandpa's spectacles,
(make circles with first finger and thumb for glasses)
And here is Grandpa's hat;
(pretend to put on a hat)
And here's the way he folds his arms
    (fold arms)
And sits like that.
(show children how to sit on floor or chairs)

Recipes:

Homemade Colored Glue!
Take the felt tip out of dried out markers with tweezers, drop them in some white glue and let set overnight.  Result: magnificent colored glue!

Basic Waterproof Glue
6 tbsp water
2 packets unflavored gelatin (1/2 oz.)
2 tbsp white vinegar
2 tsp glycerine

Bring water to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in gelatin until it is dissolved. Add vinegar and  glycerin and stir well. Let the mixture cool slightly and pour into a jar and seal tightly. To Use: This  glue is best applied while warm. Apply to surfaces using a brush. Glue will gel after a few days. To re-use, warm by placing the jar in a pan of hot water. Good for binding leather to leather, fabrics to cardboard, paper to paper.

Gooey Goop
8 oz bottle of household glue
large bowl
8 oz water
poster paint or food coloring
small bowl or measuring cup
1 cup warm water
1 1/2 teaspoon borax powder

Squeeze the entire bottle of glue into a big bowl. Then fill the empty glue bottle with water and add to the glue. Stir alot. Add several drops of poster paint. You can mix colors or use just one. (I find that the kids love the surprise of adding an extra color and seeing what emerges).  In the smaller bowl, stir together the cup of warm water and borax powder and stir until it's dissolved. Don't worry if you can't get all of the little clumps to disappear completely. Slowly, stirring constantly, pour the borax mixture into the glue mixture. Stir and swirl the results with your hands until the goop forms into gooey globs and starts slowly oozing from your slippery grasp. Kids will light up during this part.
