Activities & Crafts:

S's on an S
Have the children trace the letter "S" and glue Alphabet cereal onto the outline.  Display the S's on a bulletin board with colorful drawings of "S" objects.

Recognizing the Letter "Ss"
Introduce the letter "S" to the children by showing them the written word "snake" and helping them to see that it begins with an "S".  Cut a large snake shape out of paper and write the letter "S" on it.  Have the children tear or cut out magazine pictures beginning with the letter "S" and then glue the pictures on the snake shape.

Spaghetti "S's"
Overcook spaghetti noodles so they are very sticky.  Drain and keep spaghetti in a sealed plastic bag to keep moist. Give each child 2 or 3 strands of spaghetti.  Show them how to form S's on a piece of construction paper.  Let dry. Ask them to make up silly stories about how the spaghetti got there.

Shaving Cream "S's"
Fill a tub with water.  Using a can of shaving cream, invite the children to practice making floating "S" shapes.

"S" Sandwiches
Cut out several bread shapes from brown butcher paper. Give 2 pieces to each child. Ask the children to find items that begin with the letter "S" in a magazine and cut them out.  Glue them to one piece of bread.  Place the other piece of bread on top.  Punch two holes in the side of the sandwich and tie together with string, ribbon or yarn.  Or simply staple one side.  Ask the children to tell you what is in their sandwich and why!

Straw S's
Ask the children to cut a straw into several 1' pieces.  Then ask them to make an "S" shape using the straw pieces.  Glue the "S" shape to a piece of colored construction paper.

Eensy Weensy Spider
Eensy weensy spider went up the water spout,
Down came the rain and chased the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain.
And the eensy weensy spider went up the spout again.

Recipe & Snack Ideas

Make silly sandwiches:
Fill sandwiches with egg, tuna, or cheese.  Cut into silly shapes.  For extra fun, add a bit of food coloring to the egg filling for a colorful treat!

Bread Dough S's
Unthaw a package of store bought bread dough.  Give each child a small piece and show them how to roll out their dough with their hands, and form it into an S shape.  Brush the S shape with melted butter and sprinkle with candy sprinkles, cinnamon and sugar mix, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or sunflower seeds.  Bake as per package directions.
