Crafts & Activities
Wind
Make windsocks and whirligigs and watch the wind
work. Make sailboats and pinwheels. Make parachutes and take them outdoors
to play with.
Temperature
Place one thermometer in a bowl of warm water
and one in ice water, observe and record the differences. Make thermometers
with a slider so that children can make the thermometer rise and lower.
Seasons
Set up a season area or a flannel board scene
where children can change the elements depending on the season they want:
i.e. have clothes and accessories to dress people or teddy bears.
Make a seasonal book
Cut and paste pictures to depict activities and
clothing for each season.
Umbrella Walk
Talk about umbrellas with the kids. Ask
them what an umbrella is used for (to keep the sun and rain off!).
Open up the umbrella. How many kids can fit under it? Is it
raining outside? Go for a walk in the rain and listen to the rain
as it hits the umbrella. Is the sun shining? Go for a walk
and talk about how the umbrella "shades" us from the sun.
Puffy Clouds
Cut out cloud shapes pairs from white paper.
Staple or glue around the edges, leaving an opening to stuff with tissue
paper or shredded newspaper. Close up opening. Hang clouds
with a string from the ceiling. These can also be made from white
felt, stuff and stitched around the edges.
Songs, Finger Plays, Nursery Rhymes
~ Under Our Umbrella Tree ~
Tune of: "This Old
Man"
The sun can shine.
The rain can pour.
It won't bother us anymore.
It's cool and dry under our umbrella tree,
Room enough for you and me.
~ I'm a Little Rain Cloud ~
Tune of: "I'm a Little
Teapot"
I'm a little rain cloud fat and round
When it thunders I make this sound.
Boom! Boom! Boom! Rolling around.
Splash! The rain comes tumbling down.
~ Oh My, What Will the Weather Be? ~
Tune of: "Oh Dear,
What Can the Matter Be?"
Oh my, what will the weather be?
Oh my, what will the weather be?
Oh my, what will the weather be?
It will be (rainy, cloudy, sunny, snowy, windy..
) today.
Do you have an idea to share about the weather
theme?
