SPRING WILDLFE IN BANAGHER GLEN :

BLUEBELL (SCILLA NON-SCRIPTA)     BULB

Bluebells are a common springtime sight both in woodlands and in gardens. Upright stems above strap-like leaves bear drooping flowers- bells or stars in shades of blue or violet. They are well suited for under big trees or naturalising in grassland and they can spread like butter on toast.

ANEMONE (ANEMONE NEMOROSA)  BULB

This flower is known as the Wood anemone because it is naturalised in woodland areas. Of the three anemone groups, the wild anemone belongs in the daisy-flowered Anemones. It flowers over a long period in the springtime coinciding with the blossom of the bluebells.

WILD PRIMROSE (PRIMULA VULGARIS)

These attractive flowers blossom in early spring each year and look especially lovely in the midst of bluebells and violets. There is a dense population of primrose plants throughout the Dungiven area but especially in Banagher Glen. They grow in most conditions- marshy, sunny, dark or dry.

WILD VIOLET

These mid spring flowers are a delight to the eye on a wet and sunny day while strolling through the Glen. Though very small, it is amazing the way they stand out among the whites, yellows and greens below the trees and on the river bank
