Carnal Sinners

You then descend from the first level down into the second, which girdles less space and so much more woe that it goads to wailing. Then stands before you a large beast. The beast snarls at the sight of you and Virgil. Virgil then whispers to you: "This is Minos, when the ill born souls come before him it confesses itself wholly, and that descerner of the sins sees what place hell is for it." Minos girds himself with his tail so many times as it grades his wills that be sent down. Virgil continues: "Always many of them stand before him, they go, in turn, each to judgment. They speak and hear and then are whirled below." As Virgil finishes you almost jump to the sound of Minos speaking right to you: "O thou that comest to the woeful inn, beware how thou enterest, and to whom thou trustest thyself; let not the amplitude of the entrance deceive thee." Virgil looks unto Minos with stern eyes as he replies: "Wherefore dost thou cry out? Hinder not his fated going; thus is it willed there is willed and ask no more." Virgil then continues within the darkness. It seems as if much wailing smiles upon you as you fallow Virgil. You then see that of souls moving around you and Virgil. You ask: "Who are they all?" He answers: "She." he points "Was so abandoned to the vice of luxury that lust she made licit in her law, to take away the blame into which she had been brought. She, over there, is Semiramis, of whom it is read that she succeeded Ninus and had been his wife. She held the land, which the sultan rules. Dido, over there, for love, slew himself and broke faith into the ashes of Sichaeus. Her there is Cleopatra, the luxarious. See Helen over there, for whom so long a time of ill revolved. See the great Archilles over there. He fought to the end with love. See Paris, Tristan---" He kept going on and on about all of the people as you walked throughout the cavern of Carnal Sinners. You nodded your head whenever he looked at when he was speaking but it seemed to go in one ear and out the other.
