September 19, 1994 Kate taking the helm LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Kate Mulgrew has agreed to boldly go where Genevieve Bujold would not. Mulgrew will skipper a starship in Star Trek: Voyager, the spinoff series scheduled to launch the new United Paramount network in January. Bujold had the job, but she grounded herself after several days of filming. "The Starship Voyager is lucky to have such a gifted actress as Kate Mulgrew at its helm," said Rick Berman, series creator and executive producer. Mulgrew, who appears in the movie Camp Nowhere, was a regular on ABC's soap opera Ryan's Hope. October 3, 1994 Mulgrew beams aboard Trek ship RADNOR, Pa. (AP) -- Kate Mulgrew is thanking the stars for landing the lead role in the new Star Trek spinoff. "This is all about destiny and luck and timing," says Mulgrew. Mulgrew will skipper a starship in Star Trek: Voyager, scheduled to start in January. She initially was rejected in favor of Genevieve Bujold. But Bujold quit after two days on the set and Mulgrew was beamed aboard. Mulgrew was known for her television shows as Kate Columbo. January 10, 1995 She won't be feminist at the helm RADNOR, Pa. (AP) -- Kate Mulgrew says she won't play a feminist captain when she takes the bridge as Kathryn Janeway in the Star Trek: Voyager series blasting off this month. "I just don't buy into it," she says. "I'm sure this is politically incorrect for me to say - but the history of the world will bear me out. If we'd just stop all this absolutely endless, nonsensical banter about sexual superiority, we'd realize that it doesn't exist." That's why TV's former Mrs. Columbo is so excited about playing a character whose authority "is never questioned on any level at any time," Mulgrew tells TV Guide magazine. "This is not one of those `Let's see if she can be a captain' situations. She is captain." Voyager debuts as the top show on the United Paramount Network, scheduled to begin broadcasting on Jan. 16. July 10, 1995 She's not ready to boldly go to conventions RADNOR, Pa. (AP) -- Going where no woman has gone before hasn't been a problem for Voyager captain Kate Mulgrew. Trekkie conventions and the Internet, however, are another story. "There are many people who feel I should go to the conventions because that's part of the job - and I do want to honor the fans," she says in the latest TV Guide. But Mulgrew says the experiences are too exhausting. "It's just not worth it," she says. "Because something is going to suffer in my work." Mulgrew, who plays Capt. Kathryn Janeway on Voyager, also hates how her fans learn Star Trek secrets - such as upcoming plot twists - through the Internet. "I think the Internet is terrifying. I hate the whole idea," Mulgrew says. "What does it mean but just a total loss of privacy? (The fans) know everything."
