Emergency Medical Hologram AK-1 (performed by Robert Picardo)
The EMH AK-1 was designed by Dr Lewis Zimmerman with the assisstance of
Lt. Reginald Barclay at the Jupiter Station Holoprogramming Center, as the
spitting image of his designer. He was first activated on stardate 48308.2
(cf. Projections).
The Doctor has access to information of more than 2000 medical reference sources
and the expertise of 47 medical officers, which give him unparalleled diagnostic
possibilities.
His original function was that of an emergeny physican if the human chief
medical officer was unavailable. Since Voyager's Doctor didn't survive the
abduction by the Caretaker either, he became the de-facto Chief Medical Officer
aboard Voyager. At first his manners were rough - a character trait he had
inherited from his programmer, and his impatience with his patients did not
earn him much popularity. Influenced by Kes, however, his character gradually
mildened.
Kes also helped him develop a sense of self-worth and identity. At first treated
like an object by the crew, he was soon accepted as an important member of the
crew. Initially, he could only exist in Sickbay or on the holodecks, but ever
since Voyager is in possession of a portable holoemitter, the Doctor has been
able to walk about freely, and to join away missions.
The Doctor is a remarkable EMH. Soon after his first activation on Voyager, he
expanded beyond the confines of his original programming, displaying typical
human behavior. He has the capacity of having emotions, even of experiencing
the feeling of love.
Ever since Kes suggested he should find a name for himself, the Doctor has been
attempting to do so. He had settled for 'Schweizer' once, but that name
reminded him too much of the loss of his first love, so he abandoned it.
The Vidiian Dr. Danara Pel had her own name for him: Shmollus.
